Prop shaft - warranty issue

I have recently purchased a 09 TL Sh-Awd with 52000 miles. I did not purchase the extended warranty! I seem to have an issue with the propeller shaft. Is the drive train warranty still on this vehicle, even tho it's not certified?

go to the dealer to see if they can offer somewhat of a good grace type of thing where they fix it for you for free.. after all.. you did recently purchase it..

how long ago did you purchase the tl?

I purchased the car 5 months ago. I will also give that a shot, anything at this point. Seems like at minimum a 1,000 fix.

You're looking at ~$820 parts (Bernardi-parts) plus labor.

Thanks fellas, just got off the phone with Acura and it is covered under the power train warranty. Car will be ready to go tomorrow.

Is this a problem that Acura has rectified since the 09 model. Only 12,000 miles left on the power train, hoping it dosent happen again.

powertrain is 6 years/70k miles....obviously your covered....plus, if it falls under a tsb your always covered reguardless of warranty....and then there is always the "good faith" option....be a nice loyal acura customer when you ask for this...i just had my propeller shaft replaced along with the recall for the computer update for your transmission....that should be done as well

It's a winding, whistling noise when you reach a certain speed on the highway. It would happen to me around 60 mph. When speaking the the lady at my dealership, she seemed to give me the impression that it was a common problem with the TL and RDX. If you can't hear it the noise, it's still good. Very distinctive.

She said that the model used a carbon fiber prop shaft. They put in a 2013 propeller shadt that is a metal.

Thanks for the feedback guys....spoke to a Honda mech...one of the things to watch out for is to avoid getting the props sprayed with rustproofing....weight of rustproofing could screw up the balance of the props....does make sense

actually, TSBs do not guarantee that the fix will be free/covered by dealer or acura for that matter. a TSB is a service bulletin for known common issues for the vehicle that provides guidelines on how to 1) handle how it will be covered and 2) instructions on how to fix the problem (cheat sheet or sorts). SAFETY recalls are free and covered by the manufacturer. TSBs are covered by acura IF the car is still under warranty. if the car is out of warranty, then goodwill can be considered to cover part or all of the cost to repair the issue.

i had a TSB fix for my master clutch cylinder in my TL. i was only offered 50% goodwill by acura (despite having consistent long standing service history with my dealer, purchasing and currently owning TWO acura vehicles). my 05 TL is well out of warranty since 2010. the TSB was issued in 2011.

TLtrigirl....Do you know if the TSB itself affects 2012 models as well? I never heard the problem that people are describing but I am wondering of they changed the design of the prop shaft with the MMC?

i don't know about the prop shaft TSB for the 4G TLs. you'd have to look for the TSB and see what it applies to. i know 3G has a "garage" with the TSB listings for our cars. not sure if there is such a listing for the 4G.

i was just responding to clarify a general comment made about TSBs.

No problem....I'll investigate. I need to go to the city where the dealership is at in about 3 weeks. While I am there, I'll inquire....I won't have my Acuras since I'll be on a business trip and therefore a rental car but I need to ask a few questions about the TL and the RDX. Thanks for taking the time to write back.....

i don't see one pertaining to the propeller shaft unless they call it something else.

i dont believe there is a tsb out for the propeller shaft issue....they did however make a change in the part for the 2013, they replaced my shaft with the newer part...

as for the tsb's not being covered outside of warranty, i dont know what the official answer is, having been a honda owner for over 20 years i have not experienced any issues with tsb's being not being covered outside of warranty, i suspect it is the service depts call...but you could probably get some results if you had to push it by dealing with an area rep....

coverage for TSB fixes are written into the TSBs themselves. if you are within warranty...you're good to go. if you're outside the warranty, dealer and corporate discretion (mostly corporate, and they are getting a bit more stingy about goodwill services).

They said my center support bearing was bad. Not sure if they will be replacing just the bearing or whole prop shaft. Didnt see a bearing on any parts diagrams. I only had 16k on my car BTW

Just to try and recap:

Subject to someone finding it there is no TSB issued for the propeller shaft.

The PN has changed for 13 model year but we do not know specifically why.

It is reported that the ends changed from carbon fiber to metal but that is not validated.
-------------------------------------------
From my experience:
Unless a TSB states that is should must be done on a vehicle out of warranty it will not be done unless find a very willing dealer who needs to keep the shop busy or you have already paid money to the dealer for other services and they don't want to lose you as a continuing pay customer. Acura does not give enough money to dealers to make warranty work profitable so they are not inclined to go the extra yard unless they can actually make money. Not complaining, that is just the way it is.

I had same issue with my 4G TL AWD 3.7L. I took it to a dealer 3x and they could not find the issue. I told them what it was from the beginning and they wanted to argue with me about it. Even had a regional rep drive with me. Replaced rear diff and did not solve problem. I took it to another Acura dealer and they fixed propeller shaft = drive shaft and problem gone. The sound came on driving for about 10 min above 40mph. Push in clutch still made sound. Turned wheel did not affect sound. Breaking changed pitch but not volume. Driving between 40 to 50 and 70 changed pitch but not volume. The car came with a faulty bearing TK03. They since updated the part with TK05. I am not aware of any TSB but the RL is known for having same issue. Hope this helps out someone. If your having this issue you may want to bring in this thread for proof.

I had mine replaced after experiencing the noise a little after 50000 miles. The dealer said good thing I had extended warranty, it would have cost roughly around $2000 to fix it.
