Power loss and engine light at 4500 RPM and 70 MPH

I have a 2010 TL SHAWD - I drive it hard, not as a luxury car. I have repeatedly had the car back in the dealer for the same issue: Problem: Driving between 50 and 60mph, slide over to pass a slower car, floor it - when we hit about 4500 RPM's in the high 70 mph area my check engine light comes on and I experience a sudden loss of power/exceleration.

The problem does not happen all the time and it is tough to replicate or get it to do it again when you want it to.

The first time I experieced it I had lkess than 5k on it, and I always use high test gas - I am confident it is not a fuel issue.

Been to the dealer at least ten times, now they think it is an oil to the VTEC issue when the oil level drops and I am in a high performace condition.

Very Frustrating = but the issue is cleared if you turn the car off and restart

Any ideas???

. It could be any number of things causing the car to go into a limp mode. I would get yourself a inexpensive code reader and keep it in the car. Next time it happens dont shut the car off and read the codes.

If there were codes, and they were cleared by restarting the vehicle, Acura would have access to them anyhow. Unless someone goes in to clear the codes, it will retain the history.

Does the problem ever happen when flooring it from a stop? or does it only happen at higher speeds as you indicate?

What makes you certain it's not fuel related? just asking.

Do you have the MT? The only time I have ever been able to replicate this is in sport mode when I exceed the red line and it cuts the fuel to the engine. Just curious, but it sounds like you have it narrowed down to speed / approx rpm. 50-60mph is when it happened to me when the car was top end 2nd gear and I should have changed to 3rd.

Is the engine light flashing or goes solid? If flashing, there is a good chance it is a cylinder misfire and chances are the sparkplugs are acting up. Some TL's are known for their sparkplug gaps to be off by a lot. Best case, some wire has gone bad, or not connected properly. I don't exclude a vtec issue but this is very rare. If it is a vtec issue, the system will identify it and set a code, long before you hit the threshold.

If the light goes solid without flashing, you have an emissions issue, almost certainly it is the O2 sensors, at least one of them. Maybe at high RMPs the cats get too hot and the O2 sensors go bananas, so the system doesn't know where or what the state of the fuel map should be.

Just speculating, from practical experience. But as others here have mentioned, unless you pull the codes you don't really know.

Edit: it may be worth it to switch gas stations if you have just one regular you go to all the time. Yeah, there are crooks out there. Try shell 92 or 94 without ethanol.

I have seen MANY vehicles that the cel has come on but as soon as you shut the car off and turn it back on they are gone. Just because it comes on doesnt mean the ECU stores them.

OP, like asked above, is the CEL flashing or is it solid when it happens?

They most certainly know what it was on for, and how many times. There is a ton of info stored in the ECM, just watch Acura pull the data one day. It even counts how many times the clutch pedal switches are activated along with practically everything else. If the CEL light isn't on , but there is a CEL pending it will record this info as well. Only the Honda/Acura diagnostics systems can pull this data, not the generic OBD readers (unless the light is illuminated).
