ATF Gurgling Noise- Lomg term problems ??

Just had my car in and explained this noise, and what I belived it to be based on forum feedback etc. Dealer said no need to replace it they have never replaced or sold one in the last 5 years. So the noise is still there, my question is what are the long term effects of not replacing it, other than the annoying noise every morning,is there any eveidence of damage. I ask because I want to call Honda canada and complain about the dealer and not rectifying this despite all the information and references I provided. Then I have to go find another dealer to bring my car to.

Stick to your guns go in and tell the people you bought the car from to fix the fn problem. Only if you have a warranty with the car but still wtf?

I'm also interested in knowing the long term, my car did it a few times on cold mornings but for the last month it hasn't made the sound even once, like it just disappeared . I would like to take it in to replace the filter but I won't be able to replicate the noise for the dealer.

Just go to Erin Mills Acura...they will fix it...
Had mine replaced there...no problems now...
Who knows what may happen in the long run...bits of filter internals sucked into the transmission...damage,failure.... who knows...fix it before its too late..

there are few threads floating around here about that problem, in one of them there is an official statement from Honda addressing the issue...

It's not that difficult to change yourself if you have concerns and the dealer won't do it. The filter is less than $20, if purchased online. It's also external, on top of the trans close to the battery. Long needle nose pliers will help tremendously. I did it at 30k miles and it was full of debris. I intend to do it again at 60k. Considering all the problems Honda/Acura has had with V6 transmissions since 1999 it's part of my maintenance program. I'm assuming you have a 2012+. There are other threads on this board about this subject.
See item 3 on this parts list: AT OIL LEVEL GAUGE - ATF PIPE (6AT) for 2012 Acura TL

Reorge, I just got a 2012 TL a month ago. I have heard this sound a half dozen times now on cold mornings. I thought it might have been an idler pully bearing but didn't change with RPM. This forum has helped me troubleshoot the first issue/concern I have with this car. Thanks!.
A couple of questions:
1) how did you know there was debris in the filter, did you cut it open?
2) The previous owner had all the required maintenance done including the transmission fluid change out at the dealership. Is the dealership supposed to change the filter with the fluid drain and fill?
3) Is simply replacing the filter OK or should I do a drain and fill? My car is out of warranty so I will probably be doing this job myself.
4) This is the first automatic I have seen with an external transmission filter. All I have changed are under the pan that has to be dropped. It looks like a Fuel filter. Has anyone replaced this filter with a larger one which could eliminate the restriction?

Any help would be appreciated.

1) When I placed the removed filter some paper towels fluid drained out. Once the fluid was absorbed by the towels I could see metallic particles. I wanted to cut it open but didn't get around to it and eventually disposed of the filter.
2) No, Acura claims this filter is NOT part of regular maintenance. Quote from the official Service Manual page 14-212: "NOTE: The ATF filter is not a scheduled maintenance item. Replace the filter only if it is leaking, or contaminated, or when the transmission if being overhauled or replaced with a remanufactured unit." Unless it was changed as part of TSB B14-049.
3) I don't think (my opinion) that a drain and fill is required when the filter is changed but you will need to replace some of the fluid. I changed my filter during one of my scheduled D&F. As long as you have the proper level after the car has been driven and warmed, you should be fine.
4) This trans does have an internal suction strainer. I have no knowledge of anyone using a different filter. Acura/Honda V6 transmissions have has so many failures since 1999 I would concerned about using something not designed for this transmission.

I highly recommend using long double x pliers to make this job MUCH easier. They are available at many locations and online.

Thanks for this good information Reorge. I will be planning to do a fill and drain with filter replacement this coming weekend. I will cut the filter open. If there is significant "crap" in the filter, I will take a picture and get one of my kids to help me post it.
Thanks again!

The gurgling chirping sound is created but an obsturcted fluid flow at the filter... your service tech is an idiot.

Thanks to AREK1200 and the TSB. I've heard this sound for well over a year and I knew it was the tranny filter but never bothered to have it looked at.

But with 500 miles left on the power train warranty, and the TSB in hand, I brought it into the dealer and they replaced the filter and it was covered it under warranty.

I had the Same issue and the dealer said there is a TSB for it. Told me to bring the car in next week to have it changed. Any one know if changing this helps with shifting?

Bobby39, I just changed my Tranmission filter my 2012 FWD TL. The car has 85K and this was the original filter. I have not heard the girgling since. It was rare when I heard it, about 8-10 times on cold mornings since December when I purchased the car. I did not note a change in shifting. This filter appears to be in the return line for the transmission cooler. I cut the filter open with a dremel cutter and did not find any hunks or sludge, just discolaration. I will try to get pictures to this thread when my son shows me how to do that. I removed the battery to get the room to pull the filter out. It is right below the battery on the 2012 FWD.

I had mine changed under the TSB at Camco Acura in Ottawa and they were great. The TSB has a different number in Canada and the U.S.
Canada = E-1-1-5
U.S. = B14-049

I'm planning on doing the same with my dealer in Toronto, what exactly did you tell them about the TSB? Did you bring in/mention the one from the U.S? Also I tried looking up that number for the Canadian TSB and didn't find anything online.

Thanks!

Update to my post!

Went into Acura East and played them a video of the sound and presented them with the TSB. They have agreed to perform the TSB just waiting on the parts to come in! Very happy!

Cruzan, you say your car is a "stick" so I assume you mean manual transmission. I don't know of any manual transmissions that have a filter. There is no pump in a manual to force the fluid through a filter. For automatics, the fluid is pumped usually thru a trans cooler (to remove the heat imparted on the fluid from the pump) and thru the filter. The torque converter is actually a hydraulic pump and creates the pressure to move the fluid.

For manual transmissions, simply drain and refill to get impurities out of the fluid and new fluid.

I wonder if you are hearing an idler pulley for you drive belt. Try having someone start you car and be ready to spray a little CRC or equivalent on your belt to see if this has any effect. If you can, send us a video so we can hear it.

Well, I just made an appointment for my 2013 Acura tl sh-awd with 10,000 miles. The car started making those gurgling sounds about 2 months ago. When I called my dealership the service adviser had no clue what I was talking about. So, I'm just going to go and present the TSB to them an just let them change the filter and atf oil.

Great forum! First post. I replaced my ATF on my 2012 TL FWD and the gurgling noise is gone. My symptoms is that it would gurgle for about the first 10 minutes while the car was warming up. The noise occured only at idle while in gear. My shifting seems to be a little better during this warm-up period as well. The trickiest part of changing this was removing the screws under the battery tray to gain access. Thanks for posting the solution!

2012 TL FWD 6AT here, had the same gurgling sounds. Dealership had no idea what I was talking about, so I changed it myself. It was either $30 after shipping to purchase online and have it shipped to my house, or $30 at the stealership and I have to go pick it up... guess which one I went with!

I strongly recommend purchasing some very long needle nose pliers to remove those damned hose clamps, after an hour of vehement cursing, I went to harbor freight and got this:
11" Long Reach Needlenose Pliers with 45ø Offset Jaws

Using that, I didn't have to remove the battery tray, only the battery, to get the filter in and out.

Removing the battery tray is a Biatch. Use the long pliers as mentioned above. I change mine every 15k now. It takes me 20-30 minutes and the battery and it's tray stay put. I use the dual pivot pliers (x-pliers) but I'm sure any long pliers will work.

My mistake, you DO have to at least remove the battery to reach the filter. I was thinking of a different car.

I noticed a sound right after a cold start sitting at a light. Almost sounded like plastic flapping in the wind and gurgling combined. I guess it's the filter.

The dealer is charging me $100 for replacing ATF filter and fluids. I think is BS because I've been experiencing this issue since 48,000 miles and now at 60,000. The extended warranty doesn't cover this. The original warranty before 50,000 miles, it would have been covered! BS! So they said they would just charge $100 and not charge the $350 the it would have cost. Regional rep wouldn't cover 100% of the cost. Service manager said that's the best they can do.

Just wanted to offer kudos to folks on this forum for pointing out the service bulletin for this. The wife's '12 SH-AWD started having this cold-start sound about 3-4 months ago, interestingly after the dealer had done an ATF drain-n-fill (car has about 30k miles). Brought the car in, with the service bulletin in hand, and left it over night for them to hear the sound, and perform the TSB. Which they did without question. Interesting in that it was the first this dealer had done on any TL... Anyway the work was done and the sound is gone!

andy

PS - they gave my wife a '16 TLX SH-AWD Advanced for her loaner car - and she wasn't impressed with it. Her observations - steering not as precise, steering wheel not as thick, not nearly as spirited off the line, and felt smaller inside. She couldn't wait to get back into her TL. I drove it and it was OK, but definitely more "cushy" feel than her TL. She compared the difference to back when she went from her "sporty" 93 Legend into a "heavier and squishier" 96 RL. What can I say - the wife loves her cars in a unique way.

Any idea on how long the replacement corrects the issue for? Seemingly from what I've read the original lasted around 40,000 miles to 68,000. I guessing its still too soon for most to post updates from the time it was replaced and if the issue returns later on.

Same problem: gurgling noise. Anyone know of long term damage?

Im also curious to know how often this should be changed. I just bought my 2012 acura tl awd used from a dealership and have heard this noise since the morning after i brought it home. I already returned the car once for a wheel bearing noise and the gurgling but they claim not to have heard either. I'm going again today with a video so hopefully I will be able to better explain what it is, as it mostly happens when cold (but even sometimes after i'm driving for 15-20 mins)
What i'm more concerned about is the long term damaged this could have caused to the trans since i'm not sure how long it's been doing it. In 2 days, I will have the car for only 1 month. Does anyone know? TYIA
