2009 SH Knocking-Completely Out of Oil

Background- 2nd TL. I had a 2004 that I put over 200k on and had 0 problems. Bought this one in July of last year from Elite Acura in New Jersey as a Certified Pre-Owned (I live in St Louis). I am an engineer and not a house wife. I take care of my car and keep it clean.

I heard a knocking at mid RPMs this morning on the way to work. No lights come on at all and it would only do this in the 2000-3500 rpm range and then smooth out. I checked the oil and it was BONE DRY. I could barely see any oil on there and the guy at O'Reilly's remarked that he's never seen a car that dry that still ran. No lights and I still have 50% oil life according to the computer. The car is still making the knocking at mid RPMS when getting up to speed or if I press down on the gas on the highway after adding oil. I'm not a moron, I didn't expect it to, the damage is already done.

I change the oil according to the computer, always use premium fuel, do the maintenance that is suggested and I fully expect to go to the dealership tomorrow and them tell me that a piston skirt is bad or a rod was thrown and it will require a rebuild.

The car is 9k out of the Certified Pre-Owned Warranty and not one light came on. How does a car burn/lose 4+ quarts over 4k-5k? There has to be something causing this? To add to this issue I too have a front speaker issue and the clear coat is peeling in 5 different spots! All this for a car that has 69k on it of which I put 34k on it. I am livid. Please tell me I am not alone on these issues!!!!!!!

wow seems like you bought a cursed car... those are not normal issues with the car.

ive only seen 1 person have a burning oil but not as severe as yours.

what was the oil level on the dip stick?

clear coat may be subjective on how car was washed or if the proper technique and chemicals were used.

Sorry to hear that you learn of the "3.7L-V6 oil burning problem" the hard way.

The excessive oil consumption on the 3.7L-V6 has been reported as early as back in 2010. Read the following thread :

Def not normal and you are right to have it checked out right away, how much oil did you have to add?

Good luck sorting this out with the dealership.

What Mr. Marco said is unfortunately correct. The 3.7L has an issue with burning oil. Honda/Acura needs to own up to it, but it'll take more and more people reporting it before they do. According to Honda/Acura, burning 1qt of oil per 1000 miles is "normal". It is NOT normal based on their own track record. Also, the maintenance minder unless you're mostly in city traffic conditions, will recommend oil change intervals on an average of 6,000 - 8,000 miles. A colleague with a 2011 Honda Civic that has a interval of 10,000 miles because of 99% highway use. Based on this average, it is very easy to burn up all the oil in the car before you reach "15%" oil life on the maintenance minder.

I was always under the impression that the dipstick only measured the top litre of oil, so if your dipstick is dry you could have still 3 litres of oil left (if capacity is 4 litres) in the pan. Someone correct me if I am wrong. Maybe that's why the light never came on.

Capacity of your car is around the 4 quart mark, if you drove it this way your engine would be toast, in other words your engine would have seized up if it was driven bone dry.

Like the poster above said the dipstick does not measure the full capacity of the sump.

I am burning about 1 liter for 10,000km. Very frustrated about this, we sold our jetta 2.0T because it was burning oil. One of the reason why my wife agreed to sell the jetta and get a non turbo car so there would be no oil burned.....i guess we got burned at the end. Will see how the car will hold up in the upcoming years, but not looking too good for us to get another honda.

hmm this got me thinking why its doing it.
Just read a few Audi forums and their V8's problem with burning oil.

The J-series has been bulletproof up until now.
What did they change inside the engine thats doing this now?
any carbon build up?

long shot and opening a can of worms; Engine Break in procedure?

Not just the V8, the Audi V6 engines also burn oil.

Burning Oil

Well I have a similar issue as you do. I purchased the car in November and about two months ago the oil low light came on. I remembered hearing some knocking prior to the light and thought it was the gas I was using (still might have been). Pulled the car over immediately and waited until all the oil drained to the pan and cooled. Checked the oil and it was not even touching the dip stick. Went up to an auto parts store and bought 3 quarts. Put them all in. The car went to the dealer the same day. They checked for leaks, found none and sent me on my way with a reminder to come back in 2k miles. Well the 2k miles was up yesterday. I checked the oil and I was down a quart. Called the dealer and am dropping it off on Monday. They are going to do some sort of check internally to see if I am losing oil by the pistons or something else. I will report back. It was a CPO and I have an extended warranty.

BTW from STL too!

4.1 quarts is the capacity it will of oil. 5w20? No oil in the reservoir? Top it off and monitor how much you burn on a daily basis, pay attention when you park to check for leaking oil, if your car is burning that much and "bone dry" you should smell the metal on metal rod through the exhaust or even see smoke. Hope the dealer could find out and it should be covered by warranty, knocking - fuel and air mixing, hopefully a spark plug went bad but your check engine light should have went off.. I'm curious to know what's going on
