How to start modding?

I'm literally brand new to modding and sort of overwhelmed ig. I can go on CarID and look at tons and tons of mods that all say "universal" fit and stuff. How do I know which parts I want and whether they'll actually go on properly? The first thing I want to do is exhaust, what are the benefits of axle backs or cat backs? all the links on psuedos list are dead so I can't find them. Any help is appreciated. Thank yall so much much!

hello,

the best way to start modding is to get familiar with your car. this means to master the maintenance first.
once you have an idea of how parts come on and off, modding will be a lot easier and will come 2nd nature.

At this point; I don't think anyone is manufacturing an axle back or a cat back exhaust..
as the names imply; a cat back is a manufactured pipe from the cat(catalytic converter)and back. the axle back is piping from the axle(rear wheels) and back.

Depending on what model (FWD or AWD?), I would suggest starting off with a Jpipe.... it's a manufactured pipe that is more efficient than the stock piping.
it is shaped like a J, hence the name.
unfortunately, (or fortunately) it is only available for the AWD model.

so, if you have a FWD vehicle, you're pretty much Shit Out of Luck with manufactured exhaust piping.
however, One can go to an exhaust shop and have them replace resonators with straight pipe and you'll get a little more roar from that kitty.

as far as the term "universal", it means it's not specific to your car. meaning you can use it on any other car in the world. meaning it might take some custom fabrication for it to fit...this means cutting, welding, bolting -on, gluing, epoxy-ing, or any other means of fabrication to get it to fit.

in conclusion...the best way to learn how to mod is to learn how to wrench on your own vehicle.
Happy wrenching!
