I can't be 100% sure since I never tried removing parts of my exhuast and then putting them back on in different configurations. But I feel as though most the noise comes from the catback and this is why: After having a stock exhuast except for the catback my car became much louder. When I installed the long Jpipe it became slightly louder at top end, but overall was just a deeper tone. After installing the HFPC I got a similiar result as the jpipe in regards to the tone. Using that logic and the little I know about exhuast, is why I believe most the noise comes from the catback.

Don't get me wrong though, I love the sound my catback made before/after other exhuast mods 99% of the time. And the look is a must, the stock tips look miniature, these fit into the tail perfectly.

We should do a friendly run when I get the HFPC installed. I been wondering if I could keep up with a 3.7L

I'm sure you can in the straights; the stock weight to power difference is minimal. I doubt I'm making a lot more power than you are with the mods with just .2 more displacement.

Thanks for posting. Unfortunately I have the same exact sound as in the "Taming the beast! PCD Rasp" thread below. Like the OP of that thread, I have OEM exhaust. So, I'm not exactly sure that it is "rasp", but more of a strange metallic sound between 3000-3600 RPMs.

I'm pretty darn sure it isn't a leak, as the sound isn't audible in the engine compartment or underneath where the JPipes are...it's coming out the pipes. Plus, i think if it were a leak, it would be throughout the band, only getting louder with the increase in RPMs.

Do you have a stock J-pipe? Are all your bolts tightened/new gaskets installed?

The J-pipes on the 2gs made a similar noise at a low rev from a vibration / motor shift that caused the bend around the oil pan to come in contact with part of the headers. I mentioned this to Richie with his design on the J pipe (and I have one sitting her ready to install to my 4g) and he assured there would be no rub/buzz/rattle.

Maybe a heat shield hitting something?

Hope not buzzy new parts...

I have the RV6 v3 J-Pipe. I put all new gaskets on the PCD to JPipe, to the EGR valve and to where the PCDs attach to the motor. The noise is coming from the J-Pipe, for sure. It might be the flex pipe that is the source. I am gonna run it up to a muffler shop and get an opinion.

I don't hear any noise around the motor, either from above or below. But when I put my head behind the front wheels, that's where i hear the noise. It's probably one of the flex pipe pieces is going bad...

It might be a flex pipe. Did you check to see if you have clearance from your PCD and heat shield? Maybe its vibration against the heat shield like pseudo said

I'd give richie a call and ask'em what he thinks before potentially wasting time + money at a muffler shop.

First off, thanks for the tips, y'all.

I wound up removing the RV6 J-Pipe and reinstalling the OEM J-Pipe. My noise is gone. I rode with the RV6 J-Pipe for a long time and it did provide a nice HP boost. But now that I've got the PCDs in place with the stock J-pipe the gains are still quiet noticeable. I can't say that I miss the smell, and the freakin' slinky noise is all but gone.

Check out my full review on my8thgen.com

Still haven't motivated myself to put these on yet, but soon. It's a given that you're going to get noise and a smell by taking off factory exhaust components and removing the catalyzing portions of the emissions equipment.

On PCDs vs HFPC; if you're going to put the wrenchtime in and invite the headaches, do you you want 100% of what you can gain, or just 50% of it?

100%, but at what cost? Exhaust smells, who cares, I'm in the car. But to have a raspy note that's also louder... Wouldn't be acceptable. With just the xlr8 catback, rv6 jpipe and rv6 hfpc my car is loud; at WOT forget about it, it'll startle a rock. Also richie estimated HFPC gains to be 80% of PCD based on 3G TL dyno. Maybe the gap on a 4G would be a little bigger because of the larger displacement but I still think hfpc is a better option for my DD.

^^^ Oh, I get the balance thing. It's why I sold my CL-S6. It was TOO much for daily use, and at the time I already had an S2000 that could make jet fighters blush at WOT....which is what lead to me buying the 4G in the first place....lol.

It's why I'm not doing a catback. Keeps it "sane" but doesn't really choke it, but also leaves the comptechs on the table if I want the extra 10-15 HP.

I've debated with myself whether the catback is worth it. From a cost perspective alone its not if you calc $ to HP. At times I think to myself that I'd like the car to be quiter and that that gd catback is just an expensive noise maker (w/o FI). But then I look at the rear any think to myself it compliments the tail perfectly; moral of the story weld some nice tips onto stock exhaust lol!

Yup - I can attest - that is how good it sounds. In the summer i always drive with my windows down so i can hear the awesome sound. My gas mileage only took a small hit - but it's worth it.

you probably get worse MPG as you may have your foot in it more often now.
