Caliper swap

Has anyone tried to swap out their regular calipers to the 4 piston type-s calipers? Or is it a totally different assembly? I'm assuming the brake booster and master cylinder are different..

If it did work, or you made a custom bracket for the Brembo caliper, you are downgrading the brakes IMO. Here is some info on the 4G's brakes:

"The front rotors measure 12.6 inches in diameter (an increase of 0.8 inch over the previous TL) and the rear rotors measure 13.1 inches in diameter (an increase of 2.0 inches compared to the previous-generation TL). The new brakes generate a 21-percent increase in front brake pad contact area and 22-percent more brake-pad contact area in the rear."

You are right, the Brembo package used 12.2" in the front. But the 4G is still .4" larger and has more surface contact area.

Could have been the pads? I'm sure with the Brembo package, Acura used a better compound pad. Throwing better pads and rotors on stock brakes usually makes a world of difference.

Still we have pretty gigantic brakes, especially with 13.1" in the rear. I'm sure this setup has a lot of potential.

Its funny

At first, i thought the 4G brakes were terrible (coming from my brembo) but as they start to break in (im around 700 miles on my car) they feel a bit grippier.. plus we do have brake cooling ducts now

13.1" in the rear is HUGE compared to the 11.1"..... i guess we need it with all the extra weight

I am also disappointed with the aesthetics though... the brembos were so "pretty"... the OEM calipers on the 4G, corrode and rust within DAYS from delivery... i noticed all the ones at the dealer looked TERRIBLE... mine looked shiny and new.. but being 2 weeks old, they are already starting to look

i am curious to see 60-0 stop times on both the TL-S and SH-AWD.... in fact, ive got the brochures for both upstairs, ill go check

nothing in the brochure... but a quick google search landed me on edmunds.com

2009 TL 3.5L - 60-0 122'
2009 TL 3.7L - 60-0 106'

2004 TL 3.2L - 60-0 141'
2004 TL 6MT - 60-0 115'
2007 TL 3.5L - 70-0 163'

All i could find on the type-s was caranddriver... 70-0, not 60

not a fan myself, but if you are just looking for the "look" there are several companies that make covers for OEM calipers..

MGP
D/C
etc..

id rather put chrome bumper and door gaurds all over my car, with mirror tints and 15" wide mexi-poke wheels and a celica spoiler...

at least, the ones that LOOK like brembos are cooler.. but i would never....

neither would I, just a thought though..

I upgrade my 300C with Wilwoods. the cool thing about the Wilwoods is that they are modular.. all you need is a bracket machines and the caliper fits pretty much any car..

I got the 6 piston fronts and 4 piston rears..

the guy that machined the brackets for me is in AZ, When I get my TL I plan on having him do the TL brackets as well, so I can swap them over.

getting a bracket custom made would not be to bad. it's the overall size of the brembo system that might be an issue..

on my Chrysler it was $1700 for calipers, brackets, SS brake lines, pads and some odds and ends..

Rotors where $500.... for Cross Drilled and Slotted.

but you can use Stock, Other Aftermarket (like mine) or Wilwood Rotors, the system is modular, and can accommodate a degree of options.

so $2300 plus install, but I did it myself so that didn't cost me anything.

the Deal with TCE was they used my car for the mock up of the brackets and now sell them for all Magnums, 300s, Chargers, and Calipers so I got a $500 discount on the stuff..

so it would have been around $2800 for everything off the shelf..

I can talk to Todd and see if he has an interest in making the brackets for the TLs

he would need a car for several hours to mock up the brackets.. He's in Glendale AZ.

Haha, yea, when I first was looking at the FWD 4G TL, I was really hoping they would put some kind of better 1 piece brakes on the front of the AWD model. No such luck. On another note, I've had my car since Nov 08, and VERY little red rust from brake dust on the caliper. So that seems a bit odd that yours is so dirty after 2 weeks, maybe because it was sitting for a bit? The hats on the rotors look worse than my calipers. I'm thinking about getting my body shop to give them a quick coat of flat silver to keep them looking good.

Exactly, swapping the 07-08 TL-S Brembo seems like a step backwards. My car is very new, so I've got plenty of time to wear our the rotors and pads, at which point I'm sure there will be Rotora and possibly Wilwood options.

Patience guys, there will be parts.

Those are nice. Stopping power must be really good as well... Price is not to bad.
What was the install time a couple of hours?

I work for the mopar drift team on weekends so I was able to use a rack, 3 hours for me..

helped a buddy with same setup in his driveway on jack stands, almost 6 hours that way.

rack and air tools make a big difference..

I think another issue is that the 4G brakes are deceiving at first. They have that soft "luxurious stop" zone at the start of the pedal, so you have to go beyond that to even begin to get a performance oriented stop. I actually find this to be a pretty cool feature, as it's really easy to bring this car to a very soft stop.

I'm surprised that your brakes look so bad. I'm close to 700 miles as well, and mine still look great.

My SH-AWD brake ducting consists of nothing more than a hole running through the bumper and dumping air into the wheel well. What gives? I want to add flexible ducting to the back of the brakes. I found a good post online with great pics, but is it worth it? It looks like a good 1/2 day job, with about about a $75 investment. Help!
