Questions on Importing music to HDD
HI all, just traded in my 2007 TL for a 2012 Elite. Love it so far.
I really like the HDD music setup and so far after ripping about 6 cd's gracenote couldn't find one of them.
From the looks of it though the only want to import music is by having a true audio cd. A cd with MP3's won't import, nor will a USB drive plugged in with either MP3 or wav files import (that I can see)
My problem is that about 8 years ago I ripped all my cd's to itunes and threw out the originals. Went totally digital. Does this mean I will need to buy a bunch of blank cd's and rip the albums back into audio cd's?
This would be very painful. Is there any other options? Is there anyway to create a USB stick so the TL think's it's a audio cd? Anything options?

Not only painful, but also impossible. In my experience (and perhaps others can back me up) burning an audio cd from mp3s, even if it mirrors the tracks on the original CD, will not be recognized by Gracenote. Only retail cds will do this. Also, DVD audios will note update with Gracenote.
It appears you are out of luck. Sorry.

Sure, they'll upload to the HDD fine. Do that with 100 cd's, and you'll have a thousand or so tracks labelled "No Name".
You can then spend a long weekend burning through a tank of gas while you input track titles and album info manually. If that's what OP meant by his question, then I misunderstood.

As there was never a "plan" to encode identification data on audio CD's, the way Gracenote works it by comparing a set of statistics collected from a music CD to those in the Gracenote database. For example, number of tracks, size of each track, size of the entire disk, etc. I'm not aware of all the details, as this is from memory when "IMDB" first began accumulating this information and offering return information. One of the early crowd sourced initiatives, if you will, as much of the database was provided by users who typed the album information into the IMDB program. Feel free to correct anything I have stated, because as I said, it's from memory.
Unless you listen to bee gees or music that is somewhat old, the gracenote and the whole HDD will be pretty useless. I have a Frank Ocean album from 2-3 years ago and Gracenote can't pick that up... Nothing hip hop really.

I've had zero luck with Gracenote, and have tried uploading songs purchased on iTunes and Beatport, as well as ripped/stolen MP3s. I don't think I've had a single song indexed properly.
I just make playlists on my phone (Nexus 5) and run it through bluetooth, at least I can see it on my phone.

Couldn't be simpler. Go to this site, input your details to get to the right download, then download to a USB stick (extract the zip files straight to the main directory, not a folder), and then plug into the connection in your console.
Then, with the radio set to "HDD", choose setup, and then navigate to "update gracenote database". Will likely take about 15 minutes or so.
After you're done, you'll have to go through each disc that's missing information and choose "Update Album Information"...updating the database won't retroactively update your albums.

So is it possible to pop in a USB stick and have that rip to the HDD? I tried this morning somewhat quickly but couldn't find an import option. the AUTO vs Manual "rip to HDD" was set to Auto... I tried pressing Scan, and checked all menus and didn't see anything...so what the hell do I need to do to get my MP3's from USB to HDD?!?
Help please!

OK so I'm going the USB route.
Any issues with me using a USB 3.0 device?

Or should I go with 2.0?
