ELS Audio System & HD vs. Home Audio Systems

I am impressed with my MDX Advance ELS Audio.
Now its time to upgrade the home system or just spend more time in the garage ... But Wife might wonder why I stay there and it winds down the battery too much !

What are the recomends for a Home HD system that can jukebox CD's like my new wheels or maybe just store the CD's ?? HD makes most sense for mass storage in Auto Audio.
I got about 200 CD's and was not thinking MP3 downloads.
Speakers - Amp - Receiver also ...
TV capable ???

Sony makes a 200 disc changer/carousel. As for a system, it depends on the amount of $$ you want to spend. I can give you a link to a very helpful website for this (which is where my name comes from).

We can get you into HD audio and video.. it all depends on your budget. The more you are willing to spend, the better the sound you will have.

If you aren't an audio purist, then ripping your CDs to MP3, or better codecs, are a great way to go when you have a library. I have well over 1000 CDs and most have been ripped to hard drive and then accessed by my audio/video system.

Are you a purist?

If not I'd rip the audio to an iPod and just live with it. Yep the audio does suck in a purist sense however it will accomplish putting your 200 albums+ into a tight package you can even carry into your MDX.

If you are a purist and the iPod is only acceptable to you when running or at the beach then you can grab one of many MP3 players that support FLAC - Free Lossless Audio Codec for the purist sound. Unfortuantely when you plug it into your MDX you'll realize that you'll have to use the stereo connection and there's no 5.1 audio available in an acceptable digital format.

Or Bluetooth, which will be even lower quality, but a lot more convenient.

OP, Ditch the plastic. I sold all my CD's in 2005. I have 3955 songs on i-tunes. When I want to play music I run Torq Conectiv on the laptop thought an M-Audio mixer/card and then to 2 powered studio monitors. Best sound all around and no 5.1 BS, which is great for movies but sucks for music. You can instantly access all your music and it is filed anyway you want it to be (artist, song, genre, year etc.) You will never go back to CD's again. Best of all, if you do get a CD (from a local band or what not), you can burn it into i-tunes also.
(Save the i-pod for the car) You can run this^ system thought your TV if you want as you just need to run the output from the M-Audio mixer/soundcard to the TV and then take the audio out from the TV. That would give you studio monitor sound from the TV as well.

I do the same thing..lol. I have a Bose Aucustimass 6 system on a Dolby 5.1 Sony 100x5 amp. I've owned the Bose speakers (get this) since 1999. I've never had a problem with them. Bose support still to this day supports any issues i have with my set-up or anything. I'm sure I ncould move to 6.1/7.1 set-ups but being in a wheel chair the 5.1 set-up gives me ample room to move around my living room. Dolby 5.1/DTS give me the realism I demand of my action or horror movies. These speakers never distort and my neighbor in the townhomes i reside in isn't bothered because i let her small son be a kid and run all over her house with-out complaining about the noise... .

BOSE.. Buy Other Stereo Equipment.... Higher Prices Through Marketing! oooooh...

I'd never recommend Bose to anyone and I do home theater installs as a side biz. One can get much more for the same money. Bose is very 'Wife Friendly' though. I am not saying Bose sux, just that they cost a lot for what you get and you can't just add/change components in the system.. proprietery systems aren't cool, IMO

I got mine as fact refurbished from the Bose Outlet store for 399.99 They've lasted 12 yrs so I've gotten my full quality and then some but I understand what you are saying. My next Bose thing is the front surround 3-2-1 system for my bedroom. The set-up in my living room i did with th external receiver so i could add 2 Rock speakers for my back porch to go along with the interior set-up when I'm hosting guest for cook-outs/parties. I like the small satellites because it give ME more room to move around in my wheelchair. It works great for ME... I wouldn't change it any other way. Great mids/highs with warm bass. Bose systems on external receivers don't follow the saying "no Highs no Lows it must be BOSE" saying like cars with BOSE systems..lol.

Thanks for not being offended. I totally understand how and why Bose sells so well and they don't sound bad either. I have the dual cube set up for a few years but the ex got that in the divorce.. I went with Onkyo and Polk Audio and did lots of changes since. I now use a Denon AVR with Magnepan ribbon speakers. Times have changed and so has $$

You'd be surprised how many people do get worked up on the HDF forum over receivers, TVs, speakers..etc.. it can get ugly over a bluray video review... pretty funny

Oh I totally get it remember i worked at Circuit City. I worked Car audio and Home theater and I did cars mostly to avoid that shit...lol. Keep in mind I didn't do the full BOSE systems with their included receivers. I just did the speakers for their size with the Sony Dolby Digital receiver. And I love the quality they've given me for the las 12 years. It's just one thing I haven't had to replace. I may do the receiver soon to an Onkyo or Harmin Kardin because one of the channels is quieter than the others drastically.

I use to be a Bose Basher having owned a 35K Krell system. When I went through my Divorce, I lost all interest in high end audio. Saying that, I have invested in a few bose products and I can say, it can cost a lot more to get the better sound, when you think about hight end audio cables and such. My computer speakers are Bose and while not a the best I ever heard, they were the best sounding in, in store comparison. I/ve never really heard a Bose product that did not sound satisfying to these golden ears. Like the ELS system, it is not the best you can have, but its very satisfying to listen to.

hmmm .... thx for inputs.
I might stick to CD's over the dowload approach and will check out the Sony Carousel approach.
Is 5.1 or 7.1 really that much better than the old 2 speaker stereo ?
Lots of speakers ... wireless ???

To answer the 5.1 - 7.1 question depends on a few factors. Do you watch DVD's or Bluray movies? Do you have a dedicated listening/watchng area?

If you only listen to CDs, then 2 channel (stereo) would be all you need since the audio track on the CD is normally in stereo.

If you do watch videos and want to be able to take advantage of the soundtracks on the DVDs/blurays. then the minimum would be 5.1 (2 main fronts, a center, 2 surround and a subwoofer) speaker arrangement. If you ahve the space where your listening area has a lot of space behind you, then you can go with 7.1. However, very few soundtracks use 7.1. I use 5.1 in my system since my home theater room isn't very big.

I can assist further after you consider the above.... then it gets fun

Sony and other companies make 5 disc carousels that work pretty good. 5 at a time isn't so bad.

You need to upgrade bad. Your set-up is like me seeing my grand mothers record player stereo. Get with the times. Today even stereo cds can be played in simulated surround Dolby Pro Logic or Dolby II which sounds way better than just 2 speakers. Even my digital cable boxes are Dolby digital 5.1 surround. You can get 5.1 stuff on craigslist now cheap if you're too cheap to pay for a new system. Even a small full surround sound system from GE/RCA/Sony from walmart would suffice you. Dolby Digital/THX surround sound is such a great experience. Especially when most TV shows are recorded in surround sound when using an HD cable box or Satellite.

I'd be happy to point the OP to any number of audio options, depending on the budget. He just doesn't know what he's missing

Nothing like putting in Dark Side of The Moon in SACD format and hearing the music envelop me in 5.1 glory.. I never new it could be that good. My bluray player plays DVD-A, SACD and just about every other format. Hearing is believing!

Naaa - its either mass storage and good works or nothing. That's why the HD system is appealing.
Money is no proplem and much of whats out there is just mass speakers and features that only apease gear heads.

I can't tell by your response if you want info on an HD audio system or not. If so, what is your budget? Also, do you want to include the TV (home theater) in your system?
