“Tech package” USB Compatibility

I know that a number of other contributors have asked similar questions previously, and I apologize if this has already been addressed, but I couldn’t find any specific information about it.

Anyway, I have a 2010 TL with the “tech package.” I have a USB flash drive that I use to store and play all of my music files. I’ve been trying to play the files by connecting the drive through the USB port, but I can’t get it to play.

I visited a car audio store yesterday and the tech in the store told me that the reason it won’t play is because the unit doesn’t have enough memory to load the files.

The drive I use does have a large storage capacity and a lot of files are stored on it, but I’ve played the same drive on other cars’ stereo systems without any problem, including the stock systems on a Ford Fusion and a Kia Rio (which I would imagine would not be as technologically capable as the system on the TL).

The drive capacity is 128 GB, and I currently have about 40 GB stored on it. The files that are stored on it are WMA files, which according to the manual should be compatible. Currently, there are 10,640 music files and 1,097 folders.

I apologize for being such a tech idiot, but is this drive too large for the stereo to play?

Thanks for any help!

USB had different generations of file formats with different max sizes. The most common standard a decade ago maxed out at 32GB, my guess is that the car cant read larger than that, because it doesn't understand newer file formats. Go to a store and buy a cheap 32gb stick. Probably that will work.

What format did you format the drive in? NTFS, FAT32, exFAT?
