USB: Unplayable file

Hi all, I just recently purchased a 2013 TSX. I have MP3s on my USB flash drive but when it's connected, it says unplayable file. I use macbook to download the mp3s, if that makes any difference. Also, I've read about the flash drive needs to be FAT32. I've checked already, and my flash drive is already in FAT32 format. Does the system only play a particular format?

Help please!

Thanks.

It seems like you are doing it right. Fat32 Partition with mp3s. There are times when my 2010 TSX has that message, but only when I copy MP3s from a Disc that contained hidden files. try hitting next track. *shrugs*

Make sure when you format the USB drive that it isn't using the GPT partition style. Macs tend to like to favor that over the Windows MBR (Master Boot Record).

That may be the difference you need to get it to play

I went to a microsoft store and the guy said the USB is already in FAT32 format, can be used both with windows/mac. So, is that related to the partition you are talking about? Or it's just the system is not compatible with all USB flash drive? Mine is Kingston 8GB.

well, if you don't mind erasing and copying your songs back onto your flash drive, i would reformat it yourself to be sure. I always format when buying a new drive. MS-DOS FAT > Options > Master Boot Record

OSX will create a bunch of hidden files on any usb drive when it is inserted in it. THese include files that start with "." (i.e., hidden) as well as some files that are zero length. Also a bunch of spotlight index files.

The easy solution is to use "eject for windows" app every time you eject the USB drive from your mac. See here. It includes more detailed explanations on the types of files etc.

OP, try to downstream your MP3 to <192K first. I did that and TSX is happy to play them.

Alright, will try that. I haven't had a chance to go to the dealer yet. Hopefully it will solve the problem *cross fingers.

I got the same thing on a usb drive that I created with windows.
Not sure what bit rate, do our cars really require that the bit rate be below 192?

The bit rate on the ones I have failing are 128kbps.
Other files in the same folder play fine.
Odd.

Is there a list of coding requirements?

Ok I got it working now...finally!!! For some weird reason it doesn't play the MP3s that I converted from youtube, but when I convert the files to .aac, it works. I don't think anything else matters though, such as bit rate, length, file size. What matters is the file type. FYI, i converted from youtube to .aac, file is like >100MB, length is 2hrs each song.

Thanks for those who contributed to this thread .
