Weight reduction Street/Track build
Weight reduction Street/Track build
Hi guys!I'm about to buy a 2012 TL SH-AWD in the next 2 weeks or so and I'm planning on building it. Not planning on making it a racecar, but rather a super fun street car that can handle the abuse of track days.I've driven one of these cars a couple years ago and remember how fun they were even if they are heavy cars. Before going into brakes, suspension etc, I want ro shave weight from the car.My main question is: Is there anybody on here that has given a diet to their TL? If so, how many pounds did/could you shave? My goal is to get the car at least in the 3500lbs (car being 3800lbs)Short term, I'm planning on removing:- Underhood plastics- Undetrays- Spare/ trunk mats- Interior Carpets- Floor sound deadening- Installing Lighter wheels Long term- Racing Seats (stocks are heavy af)- Sun roof delete- Trunk Tub delete- Carbon hood/trunk I didn't mention rear seats because I want to keep them for utility, and on track days I'd unbolt it and get it out of the car. I'm going to be weighing everything I get out of the car when I do and document everything so if anybody else want to go the same route, they can get info on where to shave first. Thank you!

I do have an instagram account but its mostly for photography. Everything I do from weight reduction track preping will be documented on here.
I haven't bought it yet. I'm going to see one Tomorow and if it's in decent shape I'm getting it. If it's not, I should have one by the end of the month. I'm looking for a SH-AWD of course and if I could get a Manual that would be amazing but sadly, I've been searching for one for months and I can't find any that's not 3 provinces away. This car wasnt so popular in Quebec, Canada so finding a manual one is extremely hard and can be 4-5k more than an auto one.

I feel your pain... Took me almost 16months to find a good shape, low millage manual... And I did pay a premium... But I sure as hell don't regret it

For the RL, I didnt end up buying one cause we bought a house. So i took the money for furniture and did my kitchen instead ahaha.
Imagine not wanting to be like everybody else and waste the potential of a great car just because its comfortable. I couldnt care less if it becomes a worst daily driver, because it's going to be a more fun daily driver.
Let me take a semi-luxury sedan, ruin it, and then call everyone a hater that doesn't "respect the build"
You're an idiot and I sincerely mean it. Enjoy making your car less livable and overall a worse car.
You're going to have a super shitty daily driver and a super shitty track car. You're not going to excel in either.
You're so quirky and unique, I wish I had thought of doing this first...

Like the opinion of an internet warrior will make me cry. As far as i know, you are the only one crying about it as of now. I can take my money and burn it if I want to and that's none of your bussiness. Go clean your wheels.
Yeah, because you think I haven't done anything like this in the past? Ahahah

Want to make a track car? Fantastic and have at it.
Want to make a shitty daily driver? Follow OP's advice
All day every day. I have no issues calling out stupidity.

I actually did spend some time cleaning my wheels today, thanks. I thought about ripping out my seats, carpet, AC, sound deadening, and really anything of value and then realized I wasn't an idiot.
Slightly difference here champ, you made a track car. OP wants to take his daily driver and make it a shitty daily and shitty track car.

Funny you talk shit cause you actually have no idea on what I'm planning on doing, no idea on what i've built in the past, etc. A real car guy, even if he doesnt agree, would still be curious to see the outcome of something that never really been done before. You think you're a smartass fort thinking it's stupid, that you know better, but i bet you never really wrenched on a car proper. Anyway, you are just repeating the same arguments that are irrelevant cause they are only opinions, which are no more valuable than anybody else's. Continue throwing insults 😂

- Super fun street car you can track
- Remove cosmetic plastics (under hood)
- Remove aerodynamic/splash shields (under trays)
- Remove spare tire + tools
- Remove trunk carpets/trim
- Remove interior carpets
- Remove sound deadening
- Remove sunroof
- Lightweight wheels
- Remove stock front seats + Replace with buckets
- Remove trunk well/tub
- Carbon fiber/fiberglass hood
Did I miss anything? You're wanting the best of both worlds which isn't going to happen. You made a statement of leaving in the rear seats for utility which suggests you do intend on carrying passengers and want to have it for daily driving.
If you're doing basic autocross then you don't need to do majority of the things you've listed though from experience things such as your floormats are typically required to be removed along with your spare tire and such. Have you considered or done research on removing the seats from a vehicle with airbags in the seat? Have you considered what adding buckets will do/require in the event of an accident? This is your daily driver so obviously safety should be a priority.
Where I think your energy would be better focused would be starting with your very basic/simple weight reduction (plastics), then wheels/tires, then turning to suspension (coilovers, swaybars, etc), then braking (pads/rotors/lines), then potentially power adders (PCDs, J-Pipe, TB spacer, IM spacer, maybe K-Tuner, exhaust, etc).
Removing the sunroof and sound deadening in a daily doesn't make sense nor does removing the rear trunk well.
If you want a dedicated track car look into buying an older EG/EK Civic or even a CD Accord and gut the thing. A friend and I have a dedicated shitbox drift car (BMW 318) that's nearly what you've described but it's 100% purpose built and not a daily and doesn't even carry passengers.
*edit* For what it's worth, I do the work on my vehicles, both current ones are modified with the Golf being my daily. Because it's the daily the modifications are slightly different than the dedicated fun car (S2000)
*edit2* From more thoughts, and because I hadn't personally attempted tracking my 4G TL when I owned it you would also likely need to look into upgrading the radiator as well as the fans - SPAL fans with a dual pass radiator (assuming they have fitments for the TL) would likely be beneficial.

Do you even realise that this thread was just on weight reduction only? No cause you didnt even bother to ask more info you just started to be an ass. I know how to build a car, i've built a few, street, road course and full on racecars. I don't need anybody to tell me what to do how and when plus I didnt say what I listed was 100% going to happen. See theres ''short term'' and ''long term'', there's a reason. Yeah, there are wild things I might do that are going to ruin the comfort of the car for the street, but you know what? I don't care AT ALL about comfort.
Enjoy your future TL, I can only imagine how amazing it will be.
Because I'm petty and randomly thought of this, our guy @Max2thecore has got to have completed this amazing track/street build by now, right?

Did you clean your wheels today big boy?
cause you seem like you have alot of spare time 😂
May I recommend a 2010 to 2015 TSX V6 for this project instead of a TL.
It's a somewhat lighter car stock and shares the same V6 (280 HP) from the FWD TL.
There are probably more aftermarket parts for it since it shares the same suspension components from the Accord.

I already got the TL, got stuff done to it already and the reason why I picked this over a TLX was the AWD system. Not enough people talk about how freaking good this AWD system is. Even if its heavy, it doest feel like it is anymore.
Gotcha.
Yes, the SH-AWD is phenomenal. Good luck with your project.
The only issue I have with the SH-AWD torque-steer functionality is you have to be accelerating, at least minimally, for it to function properly.
I had to change my driving habits to make best use of this.

I look forward to seeing your project completed, P2R shaved 1000lbs off his TL so your goals are realistic. When you get a chance you should post some pics. I personally think more people should try modifying the car for track. Maybe then more companies will start making more performance/track parts for our cars. You should get a draggy and see how much time your shaving with each weight reduction mod.
