Road Noise

Anyone do anything to lessen the road noise inside the cabin of a 4G TL tech. I intend to put b-quiet v comp on the front doors but thought i'd ask here first.

change your tires, I changed to continental DWS and it is quieter. No doubt dampening will help but changing tires is easier.

Hi OP,
I dont think insulating doors will make too much of a difference. To effectively reduce the road noise, the best thing to do will be to put insulation inside the doors and under the carpet. Just my .

Personally, I wont do it. I think the car is quiet enough as it is for my taste, but everyone is different.

I find that road noise depends on what type of road I drive on. The quietest is newly paved asphault. Cement paved or roads that need to be repaved with lots of truck traffic make for a lot of road noise.

^this, the majority of road noise comes from shitty tires, or crazy tread. the rest of the time it is a wheel hub, improperly balanced tires or shitty alignment

+1 Road noise is generally tires. Am running oversized Conti DW Summers on my 3er with a big reduction in both noise & bump harshness over the factory Bridgstone Potenza that the car came with.

i know its the tires. But my tires still have a lot of life in them. Putting some vcomp stuff will cost me $200 max, i think. just getting some input. i'll look into replacing the tires to a different type when they are due.

Yeah, I would put some sound dampening material in. I'd put it in the floor on the trunk and underneath the rear seats. The doors would help too of course.

I plan to do this some day as well.

I think this is the best plan.

I'm going to do 2 boxes of vcomp for trunk & floorboards and then 1 box of extreme for the 4 doors. That's my plan but I doubt I will have time to get to it until this winter.

well, just for all to know. i took the doors apart and put v-comp on the door panel and dynamat extreme on the metal portion of the doors. to see if it made a difference, i first put the combination on the driver side door. drove around and could hear significant road noise coming from the passenger side. drivers side was much quieter. i now have the combination on three doors and will need to put on the rear right door. as a whole, it quieted the cabin quite a bit but not totally eliminating noise. another thing i noticed was the bass response from the stock speakers is much better i guess due to the better seal of the dynamat compared to the original plastic. doors also close more solidly with a solid thud. took me about 3 hrs per door just because i had to wait for the glue applied to the v-comp to dry. v-comp does not come with adhesive. i'm not sure if the adhesive i used will hold up - i used 3m 80 spray adhesive and put some aluminum tape as added support. I will check in a couple of weeks.

for those with 2010 tl tech, there are four screws to remove before taking the door apart. i can provide info if needed. took me a while to find the fourth screw. i kinda messed up my drivers door a little bit - i just try not to look at the minimal damage i created. not too obvious - except for me.

i bought two boxes of v-comp. one box is sufficient to do four doors. i intend to use the second box for the front firewall and floors to see if it eliminates even more noise.
