Plastic engine cover

Is the plastic covers under the hood really needed? Is it for airflow around the engine or just for looks?

One of the claims for the plastic shrouding is to reduce wind noise entering the engine bay/hitting the firewall.

Don't have the data but think it also protects the hood paint long term from heat degradation. Long term being on the order of 10 years and 200,000 miles. I know one older Toyota that had would show a slight discoloring above the engine on the hood after years of service. But waxing, driving environments and regimes could change how severe the condition would become.

Thanks for the info. I may just use thermal wrap for the exhaust to keep from melting my hood and with the screw type s/c the gear whine should make wind noise in the engine compartment negligible.

The front most cover keeps a seal around your hood. Without it you can see inside the hood area and the components a bit. Also your INTAKE will be more prone to water getting into it as you can see the large opening of it right there if the seal isn't there.

Mine are all off right now for my TEIN SS install I have been doing, and I have noticed these things including a bit more noise from the engine.
