Hard decision on my next purchase

I have been thinking over a month now, on getting another 4gen TL or a 2017 TLX. What I love the most about the 4Gs is how aggressive the body lines are compared to the TLX. Just wanting some input in what you guy's think, stay with purchasing another 4G or the TLX.

the TLX sucks.
have you ever driven one? the V6 SHAWD has an awful zf9 tranny.
your TL is better in every shape and form, not such a hard decision.

why would you want to get another car anyway???? if your 4G is still alive, there would be no point of buying the same or going to the TLX. unless you just want to spends $$$$$$

I take it back, the TLX is made for people like you...people who dont do a single lick of research and just wants someone to tell them what to get.
That's EXACTLY why Acura made the TLX. for people who just want the Acura name and think, "well, I've owned Acura in the past, the natural progression is to get the latest and greatest from Acura"

will you be happy with the TLX? possibly so.
are there way better options than the 1st gen TLX? a resounding HELL YES.
so, it's up to you on whether you want to take the easy way out with no research and just grab the latest and greatest offering from Acura, or if you want to spend the time to figure out what you want and enjoy in a vehicle.

As someone who has actually driven a tlx I would say the tranny is fine on 2018+. I drove a 2018 sh-awd aspec for a week and honestly if I hadn't read on the internet about the awful transmission then I would never know it was awful. I used sport mode most of the time and it was fine. No issues to even mention. I have no experience with a 2017 or earlier.

My 4g feels much more sporty but the tlx more comfortable and obviously better tech.

That being said you have to describe why you want another car and what would be the point of having 2 of the same.

I drove a '18 A-SPEC SH-AWD and felt as if it drove less aggressive as my '09 SH-AWD. I also didn't like the ZF 9 speed in that car. It gear hunted a lot and just didn't feel as dynamic. Once i got back into my car i noticed a huge difference. Bottom line, take the car you're looking at for an extended test drive and make sure everything feels ok with you. Personally i'd just keep your 4th gen but do what you think is best. Cheers!!

IMO the interior of the 1G TLX is a downgrade from the 4G in appearance, quality of materials, and back seat room.

Unless you're buying a brand new TLX that's been redesigned it is a 100% downgrade from a 4th gen TL.

Literally everything is worse.

2014 TL SH-AWD 6AT or 6MT is far better

The 3.7L-V6 in the 4G SH-AWD TL burns excessive amount of engine oil.

Audi says that 1 quart per 1000 miles is normal tolerance.

Audi/Volkswagen is industry-known for its engines that consume engine oil. So a quart per 1000 miles for them is the norm.

However, Honda/Acura is notorious for its engines that don't need to top up any engine oil in between oil changes. So the oil-burning 3.7L-V6 is a big (failed) deal to Acura, and also Acura has discontinued this 3.7L-V6 SOHC J-series engine in future products.

As a former 4G driver and someone who has test driven several times and had as a loaner the 1GTLX I would sum it up this way. It's light in the booty compared to the 4G. You won't enjoy the transition unless you are specifically looking for a lighter feeling vehicle with a hard on the eyes infotainment system.

"People like me" really dude. I love the Acura brand, out of all my vehicles ever owned none compares to my Sh-awd. I have done research on the TLX and I test drove the 2018 TLX over the weekend. It's a nice ride for sure, and I agree with you it's definitely a different feel from the 4gen. No, I'm not that guy that wants the "lastest and greatest" but I do like getting what I want.

With that being said, I also test drove the 2018 MDX and I fell in love with it! Nothing is wrong with my 4G and it's paid off do I'm keeping her. The dealer said he can give me a deal that I can't refuse on the 2021 TLX type S. So I'll update this thread on the TLX type S really soon. I appreciate all your guys input 😊

That's too long.
I loved the 2G...
I loved my two 3G
I always wanted a 6MT Mayan Bronze with Umber 4G
and I do think the TLX is a cool ass car too...a bit more electronic than car like all cars but cool none the less.
I look forward to your updates.
In the meantime, I guess let's get some fun pictures of your 4G and stories about it.

if you know what you like and know what you want, go ahead and get what you want.

I know what I like and the TLX aint it.

also, you never answered why you want to get rid of your current 4G for another 4G...this one was a weird one too.

I think he didn't convey his question properly.
If I had to guess I think what he was getting at is if you've had a 4G would you replace it with another 4G (aka keep mine) or with a TLX?
I guess he's trying to feel out if it's really worth spending $45K on a new TLX from others that have maybe had one or moved on from their 4G.
I could be wrong though.

oh im not arguing.
just trying to understand what you want out of a car so that you can get a car you want.

if you want the TLX go ahead and get it! but most people that have owned a 4G will not likely gravitate towards the TLX.

I understand what you guy's are saying and I absolutely appreciate the feedback I've been given. I LOVE my 4G it's a fun and awesome car to drive. It provides the power when I want to handles like a dream, I really couldn't ask for more. I really want a 2021 red-eye widebody charger but at 100k the type S will do justice.

I think when someone asks for opinion, he expects you say either "Yes because ... " or "No because ... ". Then he will see if your reasoning applies to him or not and make his decision from there. Responses like "if you want it, do it" are kind of pointless because of course he wants it, that's why he asked.

OP - whatever you do, don't get the '17. Go for MMC 18+ 1G TLX or try to find a nice 4G TL AWD 6MT. Everything on the 4G is better than the 1G TLX except for ride quality and NVH.

But if I were you, I'd look into leasing a fun BMW like a M240i or a M340i since you've already got a nice reliable beater.

Thanks bro that's exactly what I was looking for. Most of the guys gave me the answer I was looking for regarding the TLX. I think I didn't make myself entirely clear from my first response. But I'm keeping my 4G. The only way I would give her up, if something catastrophic were to happen. I like the new BMs a lot they're so aggressive even starting with the 3 series. It's either I wait for the type S or or grab the red-eye charger. "Beater" that hurt me bro 😁 thanks for your input.

The 1G TLX v6 with better suspension and SH-AWD would be very comparable to a 4G TL. The interior won't date as well as the 4G TL and there isn't a large aftermarket scene as you know. Otherwise stick with the 4G. Values are increasing as folks are realizing it's a gem of a car. I sold one last year for 7K in baby blue, base model. That same car is now going for 9K with more miles.

Whats funny is that every year I forget and then remember again that this car (sh-awd) is best in the winter. Love it with the wheels in the summer but it doesn't compare to the winter. When the snow falls then this car really shines.

But if I were looking for a 2nd car I wouldn't get another 4G, no matter how much I love it. Just because I like variety. Why not get something different. Something either more powerful or more fuel efficient. Defiantly something with a folding back seat.

As a former 4G 6MT owner I can tell you that the 1G TLX is a significant step down compared the the 4G across the board. Fit and finish, performance, standout look (to me) road presence. Even the SH-AWD system it's a cheapened implementation of the one used in the 4G. Many 4G drivers left Acura.

The only sport sedans today that give you the same bang for your bucks as the 4G did back then are the Kia Stinger and the Dodge Charger.

You want terrific performance, technical sophistication, athleticism and light on its feet feeling?? Look for one of the last Chevrolet SS, the reincarnation of the E39 BMW M5 at a significant discount. You will grin from ear to ear every time you drive it.

Yup i agree with the SS. I actually test drove a white '17 with the 6mt. I ALMOST bought it. That thing was beast! Only reason why i didn't get it was the dealership wanted a $20k markup!!! It only had 5 miles on it.

As someone who recently sold a 6MT TL with the anticipation of purchasing a Type-S, this is interesting.
What was the deal? It must have been a monster. Is it FWD or AWD, 6cyl or 4cyl, new or used? If you are truly keeping your 4G, which one is going to be the daily and which one will be the weekender? Inquiring minds want to know.
