faster in sport mode?

is my car faster in sport mode, then it is in drive...maybe its just in my head, but when i drive my car in sport, it feels faster, and it also sounds better as well...

most of the time i drive in drive, and when i am on the highway and try to pass, the car feels like a dog, unless i floor it and it drops down to 3rd gear...i still think my type s was faster, maybe it was just geared better...

forget sport mode - just use the the shift paddles in regular D mode - shift down a gear or 2 if needed for more umph thru a turn - easier to do when you feel you need it w/o having to go into sport mode

sport mode - about all it does it hold the same gear - higher revs more noise

The S-mode holds the lowest gear as long as possible and never gets into 5th gear. When passing on the highway I shift into S which immediately drops the gear into 3rd, a good gear for highway passing IMHO. The problem with paddle-shifting in D is that it's fraction slower to downshift just 1 gear, and you have to pause a bit before downshifting again.

When in the city I'll hit the paddles in D mode. On the highway, I'm going S mode...went to Chattanooga area a few weeks ago and driving the TL SH_AWD was a blast...my girl even got a rush.

if you are on surface streets S mode is fun. When you punch the gas you are already in 3rd, so instant reaction . . . you just go!

yes it is faster, check Wavehogger thread about his results in 0-60 mph for his TL SH-AWD. D is slowest, S is quicker and S + paddles is the quickest.

It sure is more fun in "S". Driving in "D", the car feels a bit sluggish since it tries to upshift very early. The only thing that worries me about "S" is working the engine and transmission too hard and the poor gas mileage that results lol

agree with Jason, It gets poor gas mileage.haha. I live in Utah. One day I took my TL to a canyon drive, It was super fun with S mode, Smooth and fast responds on any curves that I encountered. Fantastic!haha. I think save some gas will not a big deal if I enjoyed my ride!haha

It's all about being in the proper power band. Max torque is @ 5000RPMs and Max HP is @ 6200RPMs. Sport mode leaves the RPMs as close to this as possible so the power is readily available when you step on the gas. However, the definite downside to having the RPMs that high all the time is that it uses a lot more gas.

Cruising on the highway at 5K RPMs is definitely something that should not be done for long periods of time.

he got as low as 5.44 seconds, but most of his runs were in the low 6's

Personally I don't think 5.44 is a "normal" time for either TL.

I have trouble keeping up with G37's (not that I race, but when i try to pass or have fun), so i think low 6's are appropriate.

so Jason, have any of us try from 0 to 60 with the base model??? some car review websites stated that it's around 6.0 secs? I hope we can do better. I never try with my TL because it sounds hurt!

You'll get high 5 to low 6 with the TL SH-AWD (R&T 5.9, MT and C&D around 6.0 IIRC). Our man, Wavehogger got around 5.7-5.8 using S + paddles.

i am sure c&d and mt would use the sport with paddles to do thier 0-60 test too...no??

Yes most likely, I was writing this to be more precise about how the time was acheived versus D mode or S mode left alone...

But 5.7-6.0, whatever, a .3 difference is quite normal for any car, IMHO

How fast is fast? All I know is that the new super speeder law in GA has claimed 3 of my friends. The will be donating $500-600 to the state of GA I got pulled over for doing 75 on 70 mph HWY. The trooper said he clocked me at 84 close to the 85 of super speeder range. My car was idling and I offered to let him get behind the wheel and hit resume on cruise to see where I had it pegged. he let me go saying he needed to check his radar gun. Will I punch it...sure. Will I be going 135 mph, I doubt it, especially on the highways and by ways. I've clocked close to 200 mph once and it was one of the scariest moments in my life. Common sense tells me not to press my luck.
