Distance without key?

Anyone know how far a 4G TL will go without the key inside the vehicle?
My friend has a new Durango and to mess with him I jumped in the driver's seat while it was started (he had got out of the car to run inside his house) and I drove off. I figured it would shut off after a short distance but I could have gone until I shut it off or it ran out of gas.

Does the TL do the same? I suppose I could just test it, but thought someone might know.

it goes pretty far.

i dropped my keys on the floor at my driveway and drove off, i didnt notice till i was around the block that my warning light was on ( turned off the warning noise) and i had to drive around the block to get to my house again.

total distance was about half a mile, and still car was on.. but kept beeping.

I'm pretty sure the car won't just shut off if you didn't have the key on you and drove off. Seems like a safety issue to me.

I agree, but thought maybe it would slowly decrease power or something to prevent theft.

It shouldn't turn off until you actually turn the car off or run out of gas.

For me, that situation will rarely happen because the key doesn't leave my pocket. No chance of it dropping on the floor unless someone slits my pockets as i'm walking.

For situations where the key could leave my pocket, it would be a valet (but I turn the system off then), or if the gf borrows the car and i leave the key in her purse. Except then I won't have the key to start the car anyways.

It also shouldn't shut off if the key isn't with you anymore. Can you imagine what would happen if your friend got hold of your key and tossed it out the window while you were driving? lol..

Good thing you didn't run them over! Would have been an expensive key to replace.

On my Maxima it would only go about a block and then it would actually just die. I think when I get time I am going to have to try it and see.

Well, I checked the owner's manual. Page #193 says,

"If the engine is running and you take the remote out of the vehicle, it will continue to run, and the inside and outside beepers will sound. Once the power mode is changed to Vhicle Off, the engine will not restart until you bring back a remote into the vehicle."

I guess you can drive it until you run out of gas or shut it off!

Long as it's within the range of a .45 ACP, it's all good. </devil horns>

I thought I remembered that there were some cars that just died when driven away from the range of their remote start transmitter or keyless remote.
