Acura's Response to Excessive Oil Consumption

You will probably end up with the same base model TLX they gave me... I'm not sure why someone would spend the money to buy one of these. If the dealer wanted someone to upgrade and buy a new Acura, you would think they would take the opportunity to put you in a car that is at a minimum comparable to the car you are driving but even more car if they really wanted your business. I guess they don't want me to upgrade. My wife feels our car is nicer and drives better than this loaner even with 100K miles...

Okay so I got my work done, what do you guys think of doing one of those routine total engine cleaning...You know where the put stuff in the intake, and all that smoke suff happens...not sure what its called.
As to keep carbon from even thinking of building up again? Also What do you guys think about adding Seafoam to crank case ...my oil is only at 70% all this talk about new parts sheering is making me scared.
Since im like 1000 miles ftare a rebuild, what are the DO's and donts....Anyone feel free to chime in...
HOw is everyone elses car driving since your rebuild. Mine drives like a different car altogether. I just love driving it.

It may have benefits to old cars, but in my opinion it is unnecessary snake oil in a modern car. The "explaination" acura provided us, although plausible, is unlikely to be completely accurate. I would imagine that the real explaination is related to cylinder wall finish, ring gap and material and finished piston and bore diameters.

Hey everyone, so I started my oil consumption around 117k on my 11 TL 5AT. After the 1st 1k miles I burned and 1/8th of a quart so they topped it off. 2nd 1k miles I burned 1/2 quart. So at 2k miles I burned 6/8 of a quart and they told me it was normal and I was displeased because in the past I know my car has burned alot of oil in between changes and I've had to top off the oil myself. So I took it upon myself to run 1/4in medical tubing (about 12ft) into the dipstick and siphon out approximately 1 1/2 qts. Brought it to Acura immediately and they failed me and started the rebuild process. They gave me a 2019 RDX SH-AWD with Tech pack. It's nice but I'm excited to get my TL back and let you all know if it was worth the 2 hrs it took me to get the oil out of the dipstick. I will post some pics I took when I get the chance.

I'm jealous that they got you in immediately, I've been waiting nearly 3 months to have my '12 Elite/Advance done after they told me it would be 1-2 months at the most. I feel like I'm driving a ticking (quite literally) time bomb. I've had to top it up a bunch of times since they gave me the green light on the rebuild, and I'll probably have to do it again within the week and throw a new oil filter on. I am not pleased with how long I have been waiting.
To add insult to injury, I checked the oil last night and the hood struts failed to support the hood. A week ago they were fine. I wonder if the heat out there has anything to do with that.

Hang in there. The wait all depends on how busy that dealership is and how that manage warranty repairs. Most dealers put warranty repair AFTER out of pocket customers. However, some see every customer as equal and take whatever money they can get, those get you in immediately.

I'm also waiting for Acura to call me to schedule a repair. Its been 2 months already. Service advisor said that some parts are hard to get. No time estimate was given as well.

The inconvenient truth
I've babied it for 1000 km now and did an oil change. No more babying going forward I'm just going to enjoy it. It feels great after the rebuild. Running really strong, feeling fast. I'm really happy with the results so far. No oil burnt in that 1000 km, exhaust tips used to turn black very quickly, I cleaned them after the rebuild and they're still nice and Shiney! Of course the true test will be going forward. Oh I did add some coolant and the level is staying the same.... That's a relief. P.s. if your hood struts don't hold the hood up anymore go to eBay and you can get some for $30 and they are very easy to replace. The mechanic at the dealership joked to me that my car is one of the only 4g he's seen with hood struts that hold the hood up still. I laughed and told him I had replaced them.

Took my 13 AWD TL today to start the testing, they said they don't see any leaks and didn't need to top off the oil so hoping that's a good thing. Told to come back in 1,000 miles...

Car is at the dealership since they approved the piston rings. They charged my 2 hours, $270 to install the timing belt, water pump, and tensioner.
Hopefully they don't run into any trouble since it's been there for almost 2 weeks. Got a 19 TLX advanced with 4k miles on it
Was burning 1 qt every 785 miles.
2010 6 speed 146k miles.

It's been 1,500 miles since my rebuild. I checked the oil after 700 miles and it was still full (Before the rebuild it would be down 3/4 quart). I checked it at 1,500 and discovered it was down almost a half quart. I have not found any leaks.
Has anyone else noticed that their TL is still consuming oil after the rebuild.

...the last part on that page is the oil pump seal, which is part of this rebuild. Which, by the way, is about a $7 part. Then again, that document is from Honda Canada, so perhaps it is different in the USA.

Got my oil changed for $95 CAD yesterday and have been driving in sport mode since leaving the dealership. It is fun to get decent quick response that wasn't felt in the D mode. Wish me luck during next 1000km. Mine is a slow burner, but I'd rather fail now and not have to deal with topping up issue while I own the car for a few more years.

Picked up my 2010 SH-AWD this morning after having the repair done. They replaced both camshafts and 2 follower/rockers at no charge to me. Mine had started ticking during the oil consumption test and i relayed that to them at the end of the test. They said both cams were worn, but that they did not think it was related to the oil consumption problem. I believe if you starve a rotating friction surface of oil you have problems. Motor is quiet now. I just read the complete receipt after driving it back home ~150 miles that they noted that the rear main seal and oil pump seal were leaking but were not addressed at this time. I have never notice any oil anywhere under the car or on the motor. I will get it on the lift and take a look.

Picked up the TL after replacement of both valve cover gaskets ($0). Time will tell if more oil leaks develop.
Regarding spark plugs, ordered them on Amazon, Champion Platium ($36), install took about an hour. Old plugs removed had 110k miles and looked perfect. Pretty much the only reason I decided to have the pistons replaced is because these old plugs looked so good. The internals on this engine are strong.
Engine runs fine now, no knocking or valve lash. Hope you all have the pistons replaced without the follow-up oil leaks I had. Good luck.

AFTER the Fix, does anyone know in general what is the IDEAL top off frequency?
I ask because mine is at 1920 Miles After the fix and I wanted to know Should a car go a full 3000K (standard oil change Interval for me)
to go the full interval WITHOUT topping off or adding ANY oil? ALL feedback welcome.

Why on earth are you throwing away good oil every 3,000 miles?

I would think the ideal amount of oil to top up between oil changes is zero. The amount you should top up in reality is however much you need to be at the full line. Again hopefully its almost zero.

Usually My maintenance minder will reach 15% oil life roughly around 300-3400 miles. Who lies about this??! Im simply asking HOW OFTEN, if at all do you top off...Are you able to simply answer?

Sorry, still not buying; I seriously doubt your maintenance minder for oil changes comes on in half the time (or less) of any other maintenance minder for a TL I've ever encountered. Granted I avoid the 4G TLs like the plague, buy I am having a hard time swallowing the story that 2G and 3G TLs come on at roughly 7,500 miles while yours is 3,000 miles.

I've been waiting 3 months now to have my car repaired, and now occasionally on hot starts there's a pretty loud metallic thrashing noise for a split second as soon as the engine turns over. Of course I've ensured that the oil level stays topped up during this whole time. It doesn't happen at all when the engine is cold. This wait is driving me up the wall. I can't believe it's taking this long and the dealer still has no estimated date for me.

at least thats when I noticed it. hen the oil level was full it never did it. Nonetheless the fix will fix that..it did for me. Dont panic. most of all the wird sounds you hear and feel are related to what will be fixed.
My car drives like new. Made me love it again like the day I bought it.

my car ALWAYS did that sound PRE-repair...it would happen usually on cold start. But it usually happened once my Oil level was below the Middle line level.

I've driven over 3000km since my rebuild. No oil burning so far. I've been checking every 1000km. However I've been doing the break in oil changes. So the oil in there hasn't had a chance to get too too dirty.
I also polished the tail pipes right after the rebuild, and so far, no excessive black carbon since.

Hi All. Am new here. Have a 2012 TL SH-AWD... 130k miles. This forum has been my go to spot for all things Acura. Have had so many issues with the car, that I can't count that high... but at least I understood what was going on when it was going on.
Like all of you I received the notification re the oil consumption test.... and as I have been telling them for the last two years, I was having to add 5-6 quarts between oil changes. So no surprise that they agreed to replace the pistons and seal...... what I was not ready for was that not only did they tell me one camshaft was shot.... but both needed to be replaced because they were in such bad shape. I called Acura to open a case. I could see if one camshaft was shot... not that I would have liked it but ok, I am reasonable. But both??? Waiting to hear back to see if they agree to do anything. From what I have seen from other peoples experiences, I am not terribly hopeful, but I dare to dream. Will post whatever the end result is.
Thanks to all of you for your insights!
