Plasti Dipping Rims

I know this is probably a stupid question but is it possible to plasti dip rims while on the car? If so how do you do that with out touching the brakes with the paint?

if you're going to do something wrong, like plasti dip your wheels, at least do it right and take them off the car.

He used plasti-dip as a base coat and then spray paint over that and in some areas he missed with plasti-dip, the paint stuck to the wheel's real finish.

If you're solely using plast-dip, you should be fine, but I would take his advice and do the entire wheel, masking off the tires with tape or more commonly, flash cards.

Example:

^now now that isn't exactly true.

i didn't "miss" any spots on the wheel. the plasti dip just didn't lay down evenly enough on the inside spokes because of the wheel design.

therefore, when it came time to take the plasti dip off...the weaker spots didn't remove in sheets like the rest of it...rather, in pieces.

Whoops.

Nonetheless, it left some paint on the wheel itself.

Did you ever get it fully removed, Aaron?

Yea take the rims off the car before painting.

I taped and masked off the barrels and then used flash cards when I did mine.

Much cleaner results. I also laid down an old shower curtain to spray on.
Plasti dip makes a huge mess with overspray and you don't want that shit in your rotating assembly from spraying rims on the car.

If you want to paint your wheels do it right. Take the wheels off the car and have the tires dismounted. Properly scuff the wheels, prep them, and paint them. Then remount the tires and bask in the new, non cheap looking, paint job.

Plasidip is junk and is ruining the car sceen one riced out car at a time.

My wheels had some scuffs when I bought the car, Plastidip didn't hide it but it doesn't pop out as much. If you just wanna do the face, you can do it on the car. Use a trash bag to cover the brakes. Dipyourcar.com has a video demonstrating it. Haters can hate all they want, the car is just a beater to me and I think the wheels look way better blacked out, doesn't have to be perfect.

That's why I did mine. The stock waffles were curb rashed to hell and back.

I do not recommend "scuffing" any surface. Its just plasti-dip. In every other case besides Sharksbreath, plasti-dip comes off.

You don't want a scuffed rim later on down the road.

if you dont have the plasti dip evenly covered then its hard to peel up. in that case spray some goo gone on it and wait a few minutes, it basically almost turns it back to a liquid and then you can wipe away most of it.

Or just spray some more Dip on if it's too light to peel. I touched mine up last week after about 8-9 months cause I had some nicks from taking the wheels off, it smoothed right back out and looks good as new.

Just plasti dipped my rims and I have to say I was quite satisfied with how much it covered up the curb rash I had on one of the rims. Thanks all

Nice

Did you end up leaving them on the car while you did it?

I don't have a jack so that's the way I did it haha

Dont have a jack?! They are 25.00 for one from Walmart... Or use the free one in your trunk that comes with the car.

I was told by my buddy who owns a shop to never trust a cheap jack to lift my car. That I should be spending at least $150 on a quality one. I'd rather put that money towards paying off the car anyways, but I might try out the one in the trunk to work on each wheel one at a time

well , to answer your original question....i guess you CAN paint it on the car, just slide paper and tape behind the rim to cover the brakes. or if you dont care then let the overspray get on the calipers and peel it off since its plastidip.

not saying its a good idea, just saying its possible lol

To paint it on the car, all you need to do is wrap a garbage bag around the calipers and discs and spray away.

And yeah one wheel at a time doesn't make any sense.

It doesnt matter how cheap the jack is, the important thing is to always use jack stands on the frame or lift points once you get it in the air... You should only use the jack to raise and lower the car, its common sense but when I was young I would just let the jack hold up the car while I changed my oil- Not smart

If you'd like I'll post my plate number too so if your Plastidip rims get jacked, mine will too.

Do you cover your license plate everyday while you drive???

I used to freak out about that too, but have you ever googled yourself?? I would focus more attention on getting rid of your internet presence versus a license plate picture.

I don't think someone is gonna drive 240 miles to come steal plasti dipped rims.

Just saying!
