Any updates on the DWS? Complaints about dry traction or sloppy handling due to "soft sidewalls"?

I'm still waiting for a chance to pick-up a Progress RSB, then install it, then see if an alignment gives me some wet or dry grip.

And yes, I have been hydroplaning with the DWS...something that not even the Advan S4's did until they had 25,000 miles.

So, if the above doesn't work, then what, after 70,000 miles is it time for new shocks? The well used, but evenly worm Advans lead me to believe that the car was working just fine, but add a set of Continentals, and, well, I do wonder if we're using the same tire.

Initial Impressions: DWS

Just got the DWS's on last night. Very quiet, smooth ride both slow and high speed. Didn't really notice any sidewall weakness, but I haven't pushed it that much yet. Will follow up with a 1000 mile report.

You're the first I've heard mention this.

Good to know! I'm thinking these will be my next tire. How much did you pay for them?

No hydroplaning

$125 each at Sears (with military discount), plus local sales tax.

So far, only have about 200 miles on them, but I drove through very heavy rain last night for about 30 minutes at 60 mph. Zero issues with hydroplaning.

Also, took some 90 degree highway curves at 70 mph yesterday (dry pavement). Rock solid, didn't notice any soft sidewall issue. So far, very happy with my purchase.

Wow! Good price. The best I've been quoted is $625 everything included, out the door. Which is pretty good for around here. I'm going to have to wait a few weeks before i get them though. I hope the place can hold that price until then.

btw - Thank you for your service.

That's not bad at all. My total was $589 out the door. FYI, Sears will match Tirerack.com prices (includes shipping), but sounds like your deal will be hard to beat.

And your very welcome.

It seems that it happens a lot. Tire rack seems like a good deal on the surface, but many times people forget about shipping. I have a dealer who will match Tirerack's price WITH shipping. Then you have to add the install/balance/disposal fees and suddenly TR isn't that attractive.

So who knows who will be buying from TR.

Though I'm sure TR is a reputable dealer, I believe tyiz are one of those things you should buy from whomever installs them. That way, you'll only have one entity to deal with if there's ever a problem.

I went through a local shop and paid $180 each (tax included), plus $25 each to mount and balance. No delivery fee.

Tire Rack has them at $175 each $70 cash back deal going.

I have a set of Continentals on my car I bought used and when I can afford them I'll be getting a new set for my car. I love the way they ride and handle.

I installed a Progress rsb, and played with tire pressures a bit, in a search for some wet and dry grip, after replacing a set of Yokohama S4's with Conti DWS, both 225/50-17 on 7's. , with 38 psi f and 35 r.

I'm still looking for grip, but at least the traction, f:r, is balanced now, and the massive understeer, in the dry at least, is reduced. I'm using the softer rsb setting, with 38 psi f and 35 r.

The previous Yokohama S4's were heavy, and turn-in was slower than the way the car is now (with new rsb), but dry cornering grip is still a lot less than it was 6 weeks ago, when I got the DWS.

There's no rain in the forcast, and I'll probably have an alignment within the next couple of weeks, and will report back then.

Still, dry braking seems marginal. At least the annoying squealing around low speed corners seems to be gone, and the chirping on starts is [largely] gone.

Just bought the Stock size DWS and found them cheaper than Tire Rack. I live an hour away from Tire Rack in South Bend IN. A local shop here(Levine Tire) in Valparaiso, IN gave me a price of $614 installed out the door. Tire Racks price if I had them installed at tire rack was $628. Cheapest I have found, and I have been shopping around for 2 months. Yes, I dont get the free TomTom GPS, but I have Navi so don't need it. Will keep updated on mileage from tires.

Assuming you have a 3G, why would you purchase 225/50-17 tires. The DWS are peanuts when it comes to size, as the 225/50-17 only affords only a 7" tread width and when compared to the S.4, assuming you had the same size, are almost an inch smaller. The S.4 has a tread width of 7.9". The tires are about 26" tall, so one can say tall and skinny for the TL.

i vote for the conti. im a sales person at america's tire which is the same as discount tire in other states so i see many issues with the pilot as plus. specially in our cars. i have a/s plus myself and everytime i rotate my tires i see the thread wearing more on the inside i checked balancing, and alignment but everything is good. also when another tl shows up i always check and believe it or not at least 99% of the time when a tl comes in with a/s plus they have the same issue so it cant be all the cars. so i believe it is the tires and a lot of people complain about them being too hard and too rough as well. truth is that these a/s plus tires are REALLY good for hard driving and fast corners, but over all i vote for the dws. i rather have a asymmetrical tire over a directional anyday. i believe the directional pattern on the a/s plus is the flaw for the quick wear. i was skeptical about the dws when i bought mine, but i have seen very little to no problems with these dws. but i guess 104$ for pilot a/s plus wasn't too bad.

38 f and 35 r??? why

are you purposely trying to wear your tires down twice as fast or are you trying to skid of the road on a corner?

Continentals

I have the DWS's on my RL and I love them. I've put about 8-9K miles on so far and they've been great in summer and winter.

I think I'm going to get a set for my TL also. They are currently giving away a free TOM TOM GPS with a purchase over $440 on Continentals on Tire Rack.

I've always ran Yokohama Avid's on my cars and I'm very pleased with the Continentals. They are much quieter and softer.

^^^^ Thanks for the heads up! Actually, this deal is good for a purchase from any retailer from 8/2 -9/12, not just tirerack (Purchase price of $499 which includes tires and mounting and balancing charge, excludes tax). Get the redemption form here:

Just an FYI-If the tires are showing uneven wear, bottom line, it's not the tires. If the car is properly aligned, there would be no uneven tire wear, no matter what make tires are on the car.

I have just over 16k on mine and they still look like new and are as quiet as the day they were installed. My only complaint is they seem to always have flat spots for the first few miles (even during the summer) after the car sits for only one day. I am running 245/40/18.

I have exactly 20k on my Pilot A/s plus and its for in city spirited driving. Great road feel but damm I hate driving long distance in these things. Road noise and just a bit harsh for my tush. Next time around I'm getting some touring tires. But to be fair I drive a Accord and these were never known to be super comfy riding.

Haven't notice any issue whatsoever with flat spotting on my DWS'. (About 1K miles so far, 235/45/17).

As it was already mentioned....I am getting the TomTom GPS. It is not just for Tirerack Tires. Tires look very nice on car. A post a while back said these tires will not shine....Mine shine just fine with a generic (Dupont) tire spray. I had Fusion HRI on before these and got 35,000 miles out of them. They were just ok, but horrible wet trac. and much road noise! These DWS are Smooth and quiet so far. Very interested in what mileage people are getting from these???

The higher tire pressures work better than lower, to reduce the tire squealing during low-speed city driving around corners, and improve turn-in.

I'm due for an oil change in a couple of weeks, and will have the suspension components checked and an alignment done at that time, because there is just NO GRIP in the wet or in the dry with the DWS tires that replaced a perfectly well-worn set of Yoko S4's (which also had no wet grip, and even less traction ability in the snow).

Recapping, immediately after installing the DWS tires, there was massive understeer everywhere, and squealing when starting, and turning, and, yes, hydroplaning too! Reading everyone else's comments, I installed a Progress RSB, and while the car is now balanced, there's still just no cornering grip. The car behaves like I'm running my snowtires after spring has come.

BTW, I went with the softer RSB setting, which was a good idea, because on a low speed highway entrance ramp, for example, it is just way to easy to steer the car with the gas pedal, and I'd hate my non-racing schooled wife to [unintensionally] stuff the car into the weeds.

As many have complained about similar characteristics after installing the DWS, just curious if you have noticed any flat spotting with these tires, just for futue reference.

Perhaps it's been too hot here - all spring and all summer - for there to be any flatspotting. My sense is that the tires are best in the morning, when the road, and the tires, are relatively cold.

I do get squealing at low speeds as I pull into my garage. I didn't have that with the old tires. I'm willing to put up with that though for the wet traction the tires give me in snow.

Did you check SEARs? They (235/45/17) list at $123 each ($113 + $15 handling charge - $6 discount) on the website and for my zipcode the OTD price is $624.66 (includes M&B, tire disposal fee, stems, tax):
