I went with the Cont DWS. I have to say I like them much better than the Mich Pilots that came on the car. Can't wait to see the difference in the rain.

Just an FYI-The 235/45-17 DWS has one of the smallest tread widths at only 7.7" wide.
Huh? That's 0.2" wider than the OE Turanza stock size (7.5"). And treadwidth measurements are nebulous anyhow. Because of tire design, it makes it difficult to have a standard of measurement for treadwidth. For this very reason, many tire manufacturers have stopped listing a treadwidth spec.

The tread width is the distance between the outer edge and the inner edge of the tread of a new tire. However today's radial tires often feature tread designs that incorporate rounded shoulders and there is no industry standard pertaining to "how much" of the rounded shoulders should be included in the tread width measurement. Because of this, it is difficult to accurately compare the tread width differences of one tire brand to another. Tread width measurements are best used when comparing the various tire sizes or lines manufactured by a single tire manufacturer. Several tire manufacturers have chosen not to publish tread width dimensions

That is only one reaon I never recommend certain BS tires.
Just because the OE BS is narrow it cetainly doesn't mean that a replacement tire so be like a bicycle tire.

Just to name a few:
Yoko S.4 8.7"
Fusion HRi 8.5"
Hankook 8.4"
Pirelli 8.5"
Dunlop 8.7"

A wider tread pattern will generally equal better traction and handling along with a more aggressive look.
I'll call the manufacturer and ask for the tread width if one is not listed, just for verification. When the DWS were first available the tread width was published, but as they received negative feedback, all the specs are N/A.

Correction:

Comparing OEM treadwidths:

Yoko S4 is actually 8.3", ranked 6th in tirerack UHP all season survey
Fuzion HRi is actually 8.1" and it's not even a UHP All season
Hankook is actually 8.0", ranked 18th
Pirelli is actually 9.0", ranked 4th
Dunlop is actually actually 8.3", ranked 8th..

Conti DWS is 7.7", ranked #1!!!

Yep, must be all that negative feedback driving it all the way to #1!!!

I printed the 245/45-17 sizes.
As far as feedback, just lack of knowledge. Just like the flat spotting, there aren't going to be a few tires that flat spot and others that don't, as they all have the same construction, yet people swear they don't flat spot, sound familiar?

Ooops, sorry... Then I'll correct myself.

Must be the lack of knowledge from the thousands of reviewers that drove it to the #1 ranking.

Thank you for setting me and the thousands of reviewers straight. Without your expert knowledge from never owning these tires, we'd be clueless.

Dude,

You mean you're going to believe all of the satisfied owners on this thread instead of Turbonut and are going ahead with the purchase of a BS tire? What the hell are you thinking?

Glad you finally realized that there is truth in what I say.
I've said it before that the tire would be a good replacement for John Q. Public and as stated in the various replies they know no difference, but when it comes to a discriminating owner, they report tire softness as well as flat spotting and there is no disputing these facts, this is what a Forum is all about, like it or not and after inspecting the tire, I would never put it on my car, or recommend the DWS. So, if you're happy with the skinny tire look on the TL at 7.7”, 5/16" smaller in diameter than the OE Michelin and soft sidewalls that is fine, but people still need to know the facts. The Michelin 225/55-16 tires on my daughter's Maxima are 8" wide, wider than a 235/45-17 DWS and the 215/60-16 Michelins on the '08 knock around car are the same width as the DWS at 7.7". You can't say the tire isn't made small, I believe even smaller than a BS 960 which had the dubious honor of having one of the narrowest tread widths in a particular size.
It's just who yells the loudest, just like the 255/40-17 thread, that put a great many people on the bandwagon, although I disagreed with the choice, many bought that size and were happy with the tire, but some didn't realize that a 245/45-17 W4s was actually wider than most 255/40-17 tires. Same as stretched tires, everyone has a difference of opinion, human nature, so we need to display the facts for the readers and that I believe we have accomplished with our debate.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and on to better topics.

Not coming back into the debate, but the BS tire I was referring to is Bridgestone, not what you are implying.

I was just quoted $127 each for the 235/45/17 DWS's mounted, balanced, and installed from Mavis Tire. You have to call their 800#, 757-4291, and ask for Mark J to get that price. And oh yeah, a road hazard warranty is only $8 more per tire. So, if you're on the hunt for these tires and are in the NY area, this would be the place to pick them up.

Though I'm sure Tire Rack is a responsible company to do business with, I believe tires a one of things you buy from whomever installs them. That way, you'll only have ONE entity to deal with if there's ever a problem.

I live in MN where winter is upon us. I am going to order up a set of the DWS from Discount Tire. I currently have 18" TSW rims with Pilot Sport Plus on my A-spec but I am getting rid of the rims/tires in favor of some OEM 17x8 rims that were painted black with new DWS tires.

I am looking at both 235/45 R17 ($141 each...OtD $685.69) and 245/45 ZR17 ($144 each...OtD $694.84).....what would you guys recommend for width?

**I will probably pay an addt'l $84 for either plan for Discount Tire's "Certificate for Repair, Refund or Replacement"

$508 OTD is the cheapest price I've seen anywhere. Too bad I already got mine, otherwise I'd make the drive to NY

DWS: 31 MPG on winter gas

From today's trip back north (KS to ND), first extended trip on the DWS'. 35/32 PSI. Got 30 MPG on the southbound trip, but didn't take a picture. I've made this trip 6 times before on winter gas and other tires, never got above 27 mpg on winter gas:

Nice!! Just to compare the Pilot Sport+ has dropped my mpg by about 3 compared to the EL42. Just did a holiday road trip which usually gets me around 30mpg and ended up at 27mpg.

If I could have found the DWS locally, that would have been my first choice. Like others said, I would much rather have a single place to deal with when it comes to my tires. Buying online is great as long as you never have an issue.

Hi guys, new member here. I posted this thread last night.

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...1#post12522443

Ive been thinking about getting these tires based upon reviews, but am a little concerned about the flat spotting and tire wear.

I will have to go back and look at more of the posts in this thread. But looks like these tires kill the OEM Michelin's I have now.

Thanks in advance folks!

I have the OEM size (234/45/17) DWS' and they are wider than the OEM tires that come with the TL. Unless you think the OEM tires looked way too narrow, I'd stick with OEM size. Also realize that the 245/45/17 will have a taller sidewall. Some people claim they feel a softer sidewall with this tire. A taller sidewall likely would amplify this issue, if it even is an issue for you.

Wanting to buy DWS's but this tire is not on sale anywhere, WTF! Tirerack and discounttiredirect price them identically and there are no coupons on the internet etc. Does tirerack give any discount for acurazine forum members being forum sponsors or its just a BS?

Only interested in 235x45R17 size. Please help find a price better than TireRack's currently published 526 for all 4 shipped....

Read through the last 3 pages for the various deals people are getting on these tires. IIRC, Treadepot.com (an Azine vendor) had the best deal for a while. SEARS will match anyone's price. Good luck!

Just had the DWS's installed. What a difference from the shitty falkens (not sure what model) tires I had on. The Falkens were almost bald, so obviously any new tire is an upgrade. It was raining here today, so I had some fun in the puddles, and I was completely satisfied. The ride is also much quieter and smoother. Happy so far, can't wait for snow!

I just bought the DWS tires yesterday from tirerack for $533.12 shipping included. The install will be around 120. I will give you an update on my experience.

Quick question, what are some good signs of flat spotting? I am new to the concept.

When you first start driving, it the ride seems a bit "bumpy" or "shakey"

It seems the sweet spot to avoid this on these is 33-34PSI. When it gets below that, i notice it for about a mile, then it's gone. I didn't notice it at all until it got colder and dropped the cold psi to 32 all around. I'm going to put 2 more PSI in each tire and see if that gets rid of it all together.

I'm EXTREMELY happy with these tires. Cornering doesnt seem to be as stiff, but holy hell do these hold the road in even pouring down rain. Can't wait to try them in snow!

Hmmm...interesting point. You may have hit the nail on the head as far explaining why some folks are reporting flat spotting and others (myself included) aren't... What is the OEM pressure for your Type S? What size tire?

I've been religious about keeping up the OEM tire pressure (35/32). Plus, I'm in a heated garage (about 40F) and the outside air temp here is about 15-20, so my tires are at 37.5/34.5 when they leave the garage. Not sure how long it takes for the pressure to drop to 35/32 once outside, but this could explain why I haven't experienced any flat spotting, even in temps down to -5F....

Quick question, my car is in the shop to install the tires. The service people highly suggested an alignment for an extra $99. I accepted, but after. I did some research on Alignments and it seems and correct me if I am wrong, all they do is make sure the tires are evenly placed, shouldn't they do that while they put on the wheels in the first place? I feel like I am being ripped off, any insight on this?

If you had no prior pulling/steering issues and no abnormal/excessive wear on the old tires, it's probably a waste of $$....Typical upselling...

And if I were to pay $99 for an alignment, I'd just go to Firestone and get their lifetime deal for just a little more (use a coupon on their website).

P.S. Be sure they inflate to the OEM spec on the driver's door jamb label...

Damn, it is probably to late to cancel it now. I am at home waiting for them to finish my car(I have a loaner)... Thanks for the information though, nfnsquared!

Call them and ask where they are with your car. Don't say anything about the alignment. If they tell you they're still working on mounting/balancing, then it's not yet on the alignment rack and you should be able to cancel...

OEM pressure is 35/32...I had it at 34 all around cold, but the colder weather dropped that. Going to bump fronts to 35 and rears to 34.

Getting some snow here tonite and I will be able to test these tires . So far they are quieter and have smoothed out the ride on some of the shitty roads here in town.

Haha, well, I just got my car back... These tires are leaps and bounds better than the OEM tires. Very quiet and a more comfortable ride.

Other great news, I got the install and alignment for FREE!!! When I went to the service center at 10am. The service guys told me 2 and a half hour for mounting and the alignment, so I decided to wait. They suggested I get a loaner car, so I did. I went home, and started working from home. The two and a half passed. I called them asking about my car, the guy I was working with was busy, so I left a message, another hour passes no contact from the service guy. I keep calling because I need to actually be at work with my own car. No response, so 4 oclock hits. I decide to drive down there. He is still no where to be found. I talk to a person I've worked with in the past, and explained to her my frustration. She talks to her service manager, and says they aren't going to charge me for the mounting of the tires, just the alignment, then I wait some more. The service guy I met in the morning walks up to me and tells me they weren't going to charge me at all, do to the trouble they gave me.

So total cost of replacing the tires... is $533.12.

The only downfall of this whole situation is that the forecast for the next week predicts no rain or snow to test out my new tires :P

Cheers,
Hyde

Hehe, one of the few times someone says a forecast with no rain or snow is a shitty forecast

Glad you like them. Hope you get to test them out soon in both wet and snow. They are almost too good in rain...

Out of curiosity, what did the alignment spec sheet tell you? Was anything out of spec?

They did not give me that information. In fact, they just gave me the keys and I left. Should I call them?
