Did Acura try to BS me (regarding TPMS)

Went in to buy steel rims for winter. parts girl said i need the tpms aswell. i said no its fine i dont mind driving with the light on. she then proceeded to tell me that the traction control and abs all run off the tpms, without it, i risk not moving if i am stuck on ice or something

as far as i know, on toyotas and chryslers, all the tpms does is monitor tire pressure, and worst case scenario of not having them is just having the light on

was acura trying to fuck me into buying tpms??

TPMS - Tire Pressure Monitoring System.

like the name implies; it only monitors tire pressure

hmm, well ecu reads the speed sensors at each wheel, and if there is a difference in speed because of low psi it will trip the light. i would double check with a acura tech. it might mess with traction control.might!

Parts Girl + = Parts Girl is high; she doesn't know what she's talking about.

First thing wrong with this scenario is parts + girl. Sorry but im not trusting a woman to tell me which parts should go on my car, sexist or not.

the Tire Pressure Monitoring System or TPMS only sees PSI and not MPH.
it will trip the light on the dash once tire pressure goes below the minimum threshold, which is I think at 30PSI.

not sure about your car, but on my 2011 tsx, if tpms doesn't work, traction doesn't either; so she is correct in that matter

I can click my VSA button all day, nothing happens

^do you have literature on that!?

hondanews.com says for the 3G TL the TPMS only monitors TIRE Pressure.
and I just looked up your car....in hondanews.com

VSA is independent of TPMS.
they are two different things.

Not at home so not able to get to a FSM, but in most cars the feedback for the traction control is through the ABS sensors, not the TPMS, but if the TPMS has an error that could very well disable the Traction Control.

I never run withthe TPMS on my 06 and it effects nothing but the TPMS system .. it will give a warning anywhere from 100 feet to 3 miles that htere is a issue and then once acknowledged just a small light on the dash for the duration of the trip.

Yea, TPMS sucks but its even worse for the newer hondas! My buddy has a cr-z and the tpms does not tell you the psi in each tire, just a dummy light goes on when one is low. Also when you switch wheels the tpms does not automatically learn the new sensors. You have to take it into the dealer to have it reprogrammed or buy an expensive tool to diy. Also I believe his traction control will not work without tpms as well. As much as I loathe TPMS at least the version in the TL is top of the line.

Our gen TL and the 4th gen TL uses direct tire pressure monitoring, that's why it shows each individual tire and PSI rating.

Your buddies CR-Z uses indirect tire pressure monitoring and is the opposite. Does not show you the exact PSI rating for each tire, it only sets the light when it notices any 1 tire is out of spec.

I've been driving my 08 TL for a year and a half now with a TPMS ERROR notification on my MID and my VSA and ABS still operate... I can press the VSA and it will disable. Press it again, and it will re-enable it.

As far as I know, ABS and VSA/Traction Control uses the vehicle speed sensor and wheel speed sensor to determine if it needs assist.... I don't believe TPMS is related at all.

I have my TPMS warning pop up for my 08 TL and I'm 100% one of the sensor is broken. Nothing else is affected but just a warning every time I start my car. I've been lazy in taking it in to fix it and spending money.

My wife's Equinox is the same way although the manual procedure is documented in the owner's manual.

I am a huge fan of TPMS overall. Not a huge fan of the hassles that go along with it. I don't see my wife's car that often nor do I drive it that often. Having something that flashes on the dash to get her attention is awesome since she will tell me when she gets home. Having a detailed readout on the dash is even better since she will go take care of the tires herself at that point.
