Best strut to use for an '08 TL

Hey guys so I used to have an 05 tsx with KYB struts thought to be the best, I now have an 2008 TL do they have KYB's for me or if not whats the best strut to go with ? Im looking for something that would give me a smooth ride. The stock struts I have now suck.

Thanks a bunch

the TL doesnt use struts. we have Shocks.

what are you goals with these shocks?
do you want a factory replacement?
or do you need something with damping?

You should look into the A-spec suspension.

^i believe he is going the least expensive route.
I do have koni's on my ride, but at $600 brand new for all 4, it is quite pricey.

the OP is just looking for an OEM replacement.

KYBs will ride harsher than Konis and Bilsteins. Konis provide better body and suspension control while at the same time being less harsh.

For a great ride and great control, Koni is the way to go and Bilstein if they make them for these cars. KYB is good for the money but there are better out there.

Bilstein makes monotube dampers. This is really the start of the upper echelon of sport dampers. They are not adjustable, but they are customizable if you have the funds to do so. Unfortunately right at 2004 they stopped producing new parts for Acura, so there is nothing they make that fits the TL. The only Honda options for 04 & later is Civic, CRV and S2000.

Koni Sports (yellows), are the next best thing. They are twin-tube design (less fade resistant) but do offer quality rebound adjustment. This can be used to tune ride quality and/or dynamic handling characteristics of the vehicle. Still quite expensive, but probably the best damper out there for the TL.

Tokico Illumina is another decent option in adjustable shocks, but I don't know if they are made for the TL. They are a twin-tube design and the adjustment controls both compression and rebound simultaneously (not really a desirable trait).

Everything else is just an OEM replacment. Probably not as good as the Honda part.

How do the KYB GR2's compare to the stock shock?

I was told by the dealer AND a local mechanic that the stock shocks should last a long long time. Like almost never have to replace until maybe 140-150k miles. Not sure if I believe that or not. I took my car in before the extended warranty ran out and had them go over the car and look at the shocks primarily. They said the shocks were fine and not to worry about them. They did end up replacing the motor mounts which are a known issue with the TL.

That's too bad no Bilsteins will work with the TL. I've run Bilsteins, KYBs, and Konis on the GN. The Bilsteins were different than the rest. The ride was excellent, at least as good as stock and you would think there's no way the car will handle when pushed. But the car stayed very composed through any bump and any corner (for a live axle car anyway) and under hard braking. It's the closest thing I've felt to the active suspension in cars like the Vette and higher end Mercedes with the active damping. I have about 5x the money into suspension in that car than the TL, correcting factory geometry, instant center, etc, to make it ride and handle like a modern car instead of just throwing ultra stiff springs in it that would destroy straight line performance and comfort. The Bilsteins really tied the performance and comfort world together and made all of the work worth it.

GR2's are supposed to be stock replacements. But if you read the reviews of them on Honda-Tech, you will find most people are dissatisfied.

How did the Koni's compare?
It has Konis now and only because the Bilsteins did not react the way I needed them to at the track. You don't want the car to squat and the Bilsteins allowed too much squat. For the street they were perfect and for drag racing on a drag radial or street tire they were good. There was absolutely nothing wrong with them but the car was pulling high 1.4 60' times with the left tire in the air and a set of regular shocks valved for street use could never be expected to work well.

The Konis are right there but I feel the Bilsteins offered more comfort at the same performance level and the Konis offer better overall performance at a slight cost to comfort.

I see. Thanks.

I'm running Koni's on my Civic, but that car is very low. Probably down almost 3 inches. The shocks do an excellent job of controlling the relatively stiff Ground Control spring rates (400f/250r). The adjustment range is substantial. On soft I found they were much softer than the original shocks. Very bouncy the first time I drove. At full stiff I find they are crazy harsh/jarring. This is cool though because I know I have a lot range for tuning if I ever hit the track or auto-x.

KYB GR2's are similar to stock shocks, I've had them replaced a year ago and no problems so far. I replaced my stock shocks at 100K.

Are they stiffer or more harsh or about the same? Just wondering if "similiar" is real close hard to tell
