Best replacement/upgrade rubber for stock 04 rims?
I am replacing my the tires on my stock 04TL (auto). I was hoping to go with a little bit wider & taller tire but dont want to take a chance on getting too big so they rub (especially since I will be ordering off net).
Also looking for as quiet as possible from an all season tire. if anyone is willing to make a suggestion on size and brand I would very much appreciate it.

Search previous threads and you'll find the favorites down to the Pirelli PZero Nero, Toyo Proxes 4, Falken ZIEX 512, and Michelin Pilot Sport A/S.
I just put the Pilots on mine, exact replacment for the 17" Turanza ELs. They are great tires, a bit priceir than the others, but I've always had luck with Michelins. I paid $894 at Costco including installation, lifetime rotation/balance, road hazzard insurance and all other fees (and they fill the tires with Nitrogen).

I'm going to go with Avon Tech m550's at Tirerack. I had pretty much narrowed it down to the Michelin PS2s, Pirelli Nero Zeros, and the Avons. I called Gary at the Rack and he said the Mich's would be too sporty and hard for what I wanted, and that the Avon would be the quietest. He said I couldn't go wrong with either the Nero Zeros or the Avons, but that he would lean toward the Avons for comfort. I specified that I wanted a quiet comfy tire with excellent wet grip and decent treadlife.

sizes?
Thanks much on the brand info, does anyone have any size upgrade suggestions? I could not find info on that in the other threads if I am looking to put something a little bigger (wider/taller) on stock rims. If OEM tire is 235/45 17, I wonder if 245/45 17 would work? I belive the 245 means 10MM wider than the 235's and the 45 would be slightly taller as it is a percentage of the tire width. Anyone care to comment? Thanks much for your help.

I am using 245 45 17 Z rated tire BF Good ridge Sports and they feel better than the stocks. Bridgestone tires run 1/2 size bigger than most tires. If you get a 235 from another manufacturer it will look to small, the 245's look and feel better than stocks. My .02 cents worth. Also BFgoodridge is made by Michelin.

Thanks for the feedback all!
I had to balance $ and performance so I ended up getting Falken Ziex ZE-512 235/45ZR-17 @ $103.00each . They go on Monday, I will post my results after that.

Thanks for the Tip
Following your advice, I got the Avons from tirerack.com and got them installed yesterday. So far, they appear to handle better, are quieter, and are very affordable. I got the 245 (instead of the 235) so I don't scratch my rims anymore.
Thanks!

Has anyone had the Avons for an entire winter? What sort of winter performance do they offer?
I just got a bubble on one of my Falkens and am looking to replace. I'll likely go with a pair of Falkens (or maybe replace all four...) to replace, but it's nice to know about other options. Still not ready to blow a grand on the Pilot Sport A/S, only to see one bubble out on typical Cleveland roads....

I would strongly advise against going with a "taller" tire. Such tires will have a detrimental affect on acceleraton.. as in reducing it. Going to a taller tire is the same as going with a taller (higher) gear (final drive ratio). Acceleration will indeed, suffer.
