What does the tranny whine/wurr indicate?

Hey guys I have an 04 5at with 44k miles on it. It whines in first gear. What does this mean? I have done pressure switches and run amsoil ATF per the massive threads on here. It has always done this since I got the car with 29k miles on it. Am I doomed? It really drives and shifts fine 99.9% of the time.

are you positive it is the transmission? Power Steering pump sometimes whines due to air in the system. There's a thread on it in "3G Garage". States what happens and how to replace the defective part.

Yeah I'm 99% sure it's the tranny. It varies under load in first gear etc.

how did you determine it was the transmission and not the P/S recall ; just curious?
Also, if it's from the transmission; you might be looking at a bad Torque converter housing or bearing.

Best way to determine noise whine whurl is use of sethoscope.
Noise in cars often play tricks on you and their source.
Be a Doctor.
FWIW - I have contributed whine wurl in trans and power steering to fulid choices.

if it was the power steering whine....the noise will be more prevelant during cold start ups. As the car warms up it literally fades away.

Have you tried changing out the transmission fluid?
drain and refill ?

My 01 accord V6 developed a similar noise....right before the tranny died. ( recall issue )

Anyone correct me if wrong but, this whine is indictive of the teeth on the gears wearing down or broken. the whine are the metal shavings shifting around.
At least thats what I experienced with my accord.

my mother's 01 Odyssey whines a little in the lower gears as you accelerate. It's not really a problem, but then again the Ody's transmission was replaced at 60k, then rebuilt at 120k for slipping problems. It still isn't 100% to this day. It's kind of a high pitched whine that gets a new tone when it shifts to 2nd and then quiets down.
