What does it mean when only vibrates sometimes?

Well after countless money and time spent I'm still getting a slight vibration. Here's what I have done, New tires, motor mounts (all), transmission mount, alignment, 3x road force balances, two replaced rims and two axles. Here's the problem, sometimes the steering wheel will vibrate around 70-80mph at cruising speeds keeping up with traffic on straight road. Then sometimes on other long straight roads it drives smooth at those speeds. I've retorqued all the lug nuts and still no avail. Thanks.

Today I just finished replacing my lower control arm bushings, they seem fine after 95k miles! Only one hair line crack on each all the way through about a few centimeters. Anywho the car still vibrates around 80mph cruising. Any other suggestions? I think I'm going to have the dealer redo the alignment.

What tires do you have? If you have a multi-compound tire that uses different types of rubbers for different types of use, your problem may lie there.

Many tires on the market are multi-compound tires so there is a a rubber that grips well when it's hot outside and your pushing your car hard but as well there is another compound that flexes when it's very cold so your car can get through snow and mud and such.

What happens is that the compounds warm up at different rates on some tires and you can get a shimmy/vibration with them warming up and flexing.

Yes my car is stock and the tires are Hankook Ventus v4's. Had them for about 3 months or so.

I have the same tires and also have a vibration....but it was worse with my Michelin Pilot Sport A/S plus tires I had on before and I am getting my compliance bushings replaced Saturday so I will see if that fixes it. I also think my passanger side half axle needs to be replaced but there vibration is so small I barely notice is anymore. Ill update you to see if my bushings fix the problem

^^^ Nice, thanks! Yeah these tires grip pretty well and great for all weather however since you said yours did it too maybe it's just the tires. Did yours start to vibrate after you installed them? Like I said, I replaced my bushings the other day and have both axles replaced and it still vibrates, even after 3 road force balances. The dealership rechecked my alignment and said everything was in spec. I did read in another car forum that some guy put a thicker sway bar and it solved the issue because he believe it stiffened the front more or something.

maybe the Type-S FSB....its heavier....not thicker I believe. And these tires reduced the vibration I had from the Michelins before this, so in my situation I highly doubt its the tires. I have less road noise, smoother ride, and better traction with these tires actually

i have same problem, one day it vibrates another not. Had RL, Legend and now TL-S 2007, all my acuras had same problems with vibration. I know its not tires, or rims, i have winter set tires with rims, same vibration. If You will find what causes vibration, let me know. Because i have lost hope.

Tell me about it, I've spent so much money trying to find the problem. Someone suggest that I tighten the tie rods? Steering rods? There seems to be some slack when going higher speeds and the steering is bouncing from left to right so slightly. I checked the wheel bearings and it came out ok.

it is not wheel bearings, it is not tie rods, it is not alignment, not cv axels, not tires or rims. And i dont know what is it. Got now clue. The strange thing is that one day it is smooth like silk and other day you drive 70mph and your hands shakes like crazy on your steering wheel

Your tires are Multi Compound and have this issue. Plus your tires aren't ranked very well either:

I had a terrible time with the A/S PLUS tires on my 760. I had a CONSTANT noise at 55 MPH that was a whirring and then between 66-72 I had an annoying vibration! To top it off at around 40 MPH the car felt VERY unsteady and very twitchy. The dealer put a set of tires on the car and it was GONE.

^^ I think the "reviews" on tire rack are complete bogus. If you actually read most of those reviews people have cited the dumbest reasons for their tires. Also, Hankooks used to be at the bottom of the food chain but they have come a long way. In recent reviews I have read people are loving them, and I have to agree with them. They are coming OEM on something like 12 new models this year and offer a road hazard warranty through the 1st 25% of tread life. Plus, they are pretty reasonably priced, certainly not the cheapest

Either way, after switching from my "highly rated" $235/tire super quality "Michelins" these are 50x better.....looking back I shouldve just gotten Toyo Proxies instead of the Michelins and called it a day.

Agreed. I read the reviews on discount tire direct and had great reviews hence I bought them. They grip nice and handles well, didn't know that was the source of my vibration. What all season tires would you recommend that won't have this issue? I may try a tire rotation, even though their new.

I feel like a lot of members experience vibrations at times.....if these LCA Bushings dont fix it im just going to live with it, otherwise it could be a lot of money thrown around with no end in site.

IMO I think you're spending way way too much money trying to fix such a minor issue. All those parts replaced because you're trying to pin point the reason for vibration is overkill I think. You're just nitpicking at this point, no car will ever be flawless there will always be something. No offense just my .

But yes I too have this vibration only at certain times, it comes and goes at random. I have directional Bridgestone potenza's, and I've been told multiple times that it's the tire's fault, just as people said above.

Yes I will be nitpicking if there is a problem that I can fix. I mean if it was like a beater car or civic I wouldn't care but I don't think this type of problem should happen with this type of car. If it's something that I can bang out and never have to deal with it and have a clear mind about it why not? But as for thinking it's the tires, I guess I'll have to wait till 30k miles or so until they need replacing to choose another set. I will add this, when I rotated the tires and rechecked the psi levels and retorqued all the nuts, the vibration did go away a little bit.

It will do wonders for your steering and really firms up the front end on the highway

PS I hope your not bringing it to Acura....they are make you get new LCA most likely and it will end up costing you about 700 dollars....I paid 220 for parts and labor at a local Honda/Acura shop
