Weird red splotches on rear-view mirror

I have a 2005 TL.

About 3 months ago, the passenger side rear-view mirror started developing these reddish-orange splotches on the glass. It's not anything I can wash off -- it looks like some kind of chemical reaction is going on.

Any ideas on what it is and how to remove? Thx.

Its really strange that you mentioned this. Just last week I saw this as well on my 2005 TL as well. At first I thought it was rust on my side view mirrors but then I thought to myself that it was glass. It rubs off but it was weird that it was there. I don't know what it was.

I saw the same thing this past weekend while washing my 04...it's a small, redish looking spot. It won't come off..looks like it's inside the glass. My guess it's something to do with the heating element.

Well, I had to take the car in for B service today, and they looked at the mirror -- said it was "something" on the back of the glass causing the splotches so they replaced the glass. It was still under warranty.

I have a hard time getting good explanations for things from the service dept. at the dealership -- think their motto is the less the customer knows, the better. But it's fixed anyway. Good luck to the rest of you.

My last point on this thread...the dealership said that sometimes liquids can get between the coating and the glass causing the chemical reaction and splotches. Now that I think about it, it started right after I had the car detailed, so I bet something got in there that wasn't supposed to be in there. Just get the glass replaced!

I had a small brown/red spot on the passenger side mirror that started growing to the size of a dime. It started happening to my driver side mirror too, just recently. It's like a rust spot or similiar to an old mirror in a bathroom. Something was forming behind the mirror where the heating element was. Washing the car, rain, or using the heating element was causing some type of stain/rust.

I have 69,000+ miles on my 2004 TL w/ extended warranty. I brought the car in for inspection & mentioned to the dealer that I had an extended warranty & also still covered under body rust warranty thru Acura. I asked if this problem could be covered under the body rust warranty or my extended contract & was told they will find out. They haven't seen this problem before & agreed there was some type of stain behind the mirrors.

I went back the next day & the assistant manager told me that he would be replacing both passenger & driver side mirrors free of charge for servicing my vehicle with them regularly. I was delighted to hear this, especially since they will be replacing both entire housings for free & not just the glass! Those old side view mirrors had some nasty rock chips too. After they were replaced, I asked what caused the stains on the mirrors & was told that they were not sure. Oh well, I wish they knew so I can prevent it from happening on my new set.

So if any of you know what is causing it, please let us know.
