Trunk Lid Slams

Hi,

This has been bothering me for a long long time. My trunk lid slams on the way down as though there are no tensions. The torsion bar looks okay.

Is this normal behavior?

Or there is something I can adjust so it won't "slam down"?

Thanks!!!

I don't think so, mine is the same way. I never let anyone else close the trunk because it is so easy to slam. I hold it on the way down and finish it off at the end to avoid the slam.

Yeah that's what I've been doing ... I don't understand why they didn't put a spring of some sort ... Is there a mod that can be applied to solve this ?

you can take out the rubber weighted block behind the carpet cover and the trunk wont "slam" shut

but whats the big deal if it slams anyway??
It's SUPPOSED to have a solid thud

Normal, that's why it will pop open maybe a foot, doesn't need to be slammed closed as it will lock with minimal pressure, and when opened fully it won't come down.
Hard to get used to as when others close the trunk it sounds like they are trying to close a vault door, the closure can be felt throughout the entire car.

I got this from Amazon. It's a set of springs. Works very well. Pops and closes at half way, then you just have to close it gently.

Amazon.com: 2 x Adjustable Automatic Trunk Lid Lifting Spring Device Gold Tone for Car Auto: Automotive Amazon.com: 2 x Adjustable Automatic Trunk Lid Lifting Spring Device Gold Tone for Car Auto: Automotive

Very easy to install too !

You can remove the boat weight in the center of the trunk lid under the felt cover that'll help.

Don't touch the torsion bars as they have a lot of stored energy. They can easily break bones.

You can buy the stronger bars that are included with the A-Spec Decklid Wing as it adds weight.

How can I safely remove my torsion bars? One of them snapped on me, so I have to replace them, I don't like the idea of my trunk being heavy to lift.

here's my thread.

Thanks csmeance for the wonderful suggestion about removing the boat weight. I removed it and adjusted the springs tension so now the trunk opens all the way up in moderate speed. Love it.

@SoL_Tek : as csmeance said, it might be dangerous. hence i went with this alternate solution. Yes, I would have replaced the torsion bar if it was broken, but preferably by dealer or a garage

Sounds good man, post a pic when you have the chance, so I can get an idea on how you did your springs.

It helps if you have a spring tool. Try making one with threaded water pipes.

Hi,

Here's the installation for the springs.

First of all, buy 2 U-Bolts from HomeDepot so you don't have to add extra tension to the torsion bars. Get the small ones. The U-Bolts go on the trunk swing bars (do not include the torsion bars) and then you hook the key chain part of the springs to it. There's no need to remove the torsion bars since the space between the torsion bar hook and the swing bar is big enough for the U-Bolt to go through. The other end of the springs hook to one of the trunk holes. Then just adjust the spring tension to set how high the trunk will open. It requires calibration multiple times to get it right. I have mine set to open all the way up. It's kind of neat because towards the full open, it slows down so it's like having a hydrolic

Here are the pics in order

Total cost for this mod is under $15.

Hope this is useful to anyone wanting a trunk that fully opens.

Here's a video with these springs.

Yeah, I don't think anyone has done this before. Hence, you see the scratch marks surrounding the holes because I tried multiple times to see what's the best way and easiest to do this. For example, now I look at my pictures, I think I'd have positioned the U-Bolts the other way around.

My TL was like a guinea pig

But it's worth it. Hope this is helpful to you and others.

thats fine, who is even going to peek their head in there and look at the scratches lol, so nothing to worry about there. well the U-bolts look fine as is. but if it is more convenient then why not switch there around =).

And I think your right. I had not heard of anyone else doing this mod.

but yes it is helpful man. thanks!

That looks like it worked great! I'm going to give this a try because with all my sound dampener my trunk lid is very heavy and doesn't pop up at all. It just releases and you wouldn't even know it's open. I've even had it smash on my head when on an incline so I'll try this out for safety reasons.

Do you have to remove the liner to get to the spring area? Also why would you switch the u bolts around they look fine? Do you mean rotate then 90 degrees so the spring is straight?

Hi sockr1 :

Yes you have to open the top liner partially. The clips are along side the trunk light area. Be careful as they break easily. One more top, when installing the U-Bolts, it's easier if you have the trunk half way open so the swing bars are more easily accessible.

As for the U-Bolts, I mean 180 degrees around so the U is in the front instead of the back.

thanks for the clarification! i'm going to have to try this. i'll get the u-bolts today and order the springs also. it's such a pain for me to put things on the ground, lift the trunk lid all the way, then pick up my items and put them in.

i've removed the liner a few times before so shouldn't be too bad

thanks again!

also conditioning the seals with 303 Aerospace Protectant or 1Z Gummiplfedge seemed to help the truck lid bounce higher when opening! I use it on the rubber all over the car including sunroof seal.

Thanks for this! I hated the Slamming! Every time someone else closes the trunk, passengers think it was an act of passive aggression.

Holy crap this is amazing!
My trunk only opens up half a cm!

Only downside for careless people is if it pops open and hits something.
Not going to lie, I was worried your trunk was going to get scratched by the garage door in the video, it looked kinda close.

You should make a DIY thread for it

i just bought the adjustable spring from amazon and will try it out

@Saving4aTL : Yup, people always say sorry when they let go the trunk because they didn't know it just falls without resistance.

@csmeance : I shall try that too !

@guitarplayer16 : Haha yeah, I'd avoid parking in areas with low ceilings or trees or under ceiling storage racks ... I thought about this too but I really wanted a trunk that opens fully and automatically.

By the way, if you want to do this, remove the dead bot on the center back of the trunk lid. That thing is heavy. By removing it, you don't have to adjust the springs that much which allows easier installation !

Good luck guys !

where the heck is this dead weight in the trunk lid? i put sound dampener all over and i don't see it. is it directly in the middle of the back of the trunk lid? or is it covered by any plastic?

got the springs installed but they only pop the trunk lid up about 1/3rd of the way. i need to add more tension to the springs but i can't get the spring lid out of the trunk hole haha. might just leave it as is, it's better than popping up 1/2"!

thank you, i only pulled down the liner halfway so that's why i didn't see it. when i was looking at my pics of my sound dampening install, i didn't see it either, but now i realized that i took it out for the sound dampening, took the pic, and reinstalled it.

i'll take it off tomorrow, thanks!

Yeah at first, I only had it half way open and didn't see it. So I removed all and saw it That thing is heavy. Once it's removed, I am very sure your trunk lid will open all the way !

For those that don't have a wing spoiler you can install the heavier duty torsion bars to help open the deck lid.

I would install the bars first with the weight in place to see if it opens enough. If not then remove the weight for maximum lift.

Wing Spoiler Torsion Bar P/N:

08F12-SEP-20120 (right side)

08F12-SEP-20021 (left side)

$22.00 EA.

I had a wing spoiler and don't think they ever upgraded the torsion springs...I'll have to look into this because it does drive me nuts that I can never tell if I actually popped the trunk or not since it likes to get stuck.

With the CSL now, and the dampening I added...she don't pop at all. I remember when I was getting the old spoiler holes filled...without the liner and license plate trim that baby would pop all the way open!

turns out i already removed my dead weight when i did my sound deadening install haha. but my sound deadener makes up the weight of the removed dead weight so i'll never get full opening of the trunk lid. i have no threads showing on the springs and i get about half way up. still much better than before though!

tonight i'll upload a video of before and after the spring install

I guess that would help. Originally, I just wanted it not to slam so I considered changing the torsion bar. Then I realized it's kind of dangerous to DIY. So I searched for alternatives. Came across these trunk springs. Loved it as now it didn't slam. Then csmeanse suggested removing the dead weight. Which leads me to wanting a trunk that opens the trunk all the way in a fluid way. I don't think changing the torsion bar alone would allow me to achieve this.

Well, I meant torsion bar AND the spring!
I agree, I have to stare at my trunk while pressing the button to see if it pops up 1mm to know if it worked. This would be much better...

I am not afraid of changing the torsion bars...I am afraid of paying for a $35 one time use tool!
