3G TL OEM Subwoofer blew up!
Well this morning on the way to work I was stuck in traffic due to a accident, while traffic was moving bumper to bumper I heard a loud bang! and the sound of glass breaking! I thought my TL got rear ended but I looked around me and everyone was just on their own world and frustrated being stuck in traffic! but I was confused on what I just heard! It was really loud, so I pulled over and checked my car and everything looked normal from the outside. As I began pulling back onto the freeway, I heard something loose bouncing around from my rear deck where the speakers are. I checked my rear audio and my sub woofer was out! I don't know much about car stereos, but man was that loud and my TL's trunk is really heavy to open?? whatever happened to my sub it wasn't too good at all that it affected my trunk as well
I don't have a day off until Christmas to get back there and open it up, but has this happened to anyone in their 3g TL? BTW Stock factory sub, and audio is factory.

LOL...so it wasn't the sound of glass breaking then?!
My guess is the bottom of your subwoofer fell out (surround probably fell apart) and the magnet hit the "springs" that help open/close the trunk...which are probably getting stuck when you try and open.
Nothing major, I don't think. Good luck!

Lol at first I tought it was glass, but sounds like subwoofer fell and made the springs bounce around in there. Thanks man! and I hope nothing major

No sound at all from the Subwoofer, all I heard is a rattling noise from the center of rear deck where the sub is located. Man im hoping its not a ugly mess when I open it. As far as I know I have to completely remove the rear seats to get back there.
removing the seats isnt a big deal..
If you need the oem sub i have one.. just pay shp..

LOL...consider it?
That's a mighty generous offer!
Yeah, you'll definitely be removing seats...unless you want to just live with no sub and remove the panel from the trunk and fish the remains of whatever fell apart out of there!

alright alright then I will accept the offer lol. Yeah my biggest concern is fishing for the remains of "what" .. I hope it was just the springs that bounced off happily around the trunk panel lol.

LOL...I bet it's the subwoofer little baby magnet that's probably magnetized and stuck itself between the 2 trunk springs.
Either way, minor fix for you, man...don't sweat it.

Okay here are the pics!
pic #1, 2, and 3. That grey piece hold the hangars to the trunk and that broke off, and it sits right on top to the Subwoofer and is about an inch away from it.
pic #4 left hangar broke off from the end.
pic #5 & 6 . how hangar should look (right). next pic, hangar is broken.
pic #7 Damn OEM Sub!!
pic #8 Ripped her apart -=)
Pic #9 and 10 hangar that broke off.
So I don't know how the hell this happened, but I guess the Sub blew up and with that Impact (force) it broke my Trunk hangar holder piece, and also with that breaking it made my right hangar snap from the end.

those are the torsion bars the hold the trunk up when open! They have enough stored energy to break bones so be careful! YOu'll need a special tool to put them in and remove the old ones safely.
Best of luck!

Man sounds risky to DIY. Do you happen to know what tool that might be by chance CSMEANCE?? and thanks for your advice, good thing I didn't remove the right torsion bar.

Could not open the PDF file but I found it under the A-Spec installation instructions. I could not find that tool online, so I'll have to visit the dealer.
read this link and the instructions on top to access the PDF of the Wing install:

Dealer will do the install for you, and doesnt cost much. I did it myself using vice grips and a screwdriver. No kidding about the stored energy in the springs, be careful with them. The dealer near my house loaned me that special tool after the fact.
Yeah man, sounds better to be safe than sorry on this one. Just remembering how bad it sounded when it snapped while I was driving, having me think I got rear ended for a second
It really makes think of how much energy is really stored. That's cool man, my dealer is about 10 minutes away, and I hope they can install them since I will be buying the Torsion rods from them and torsion clip, or I hope they be courteous to loan me the tool.

Okay cool, I have to look for the part number on a A-Spec install thread. Yes it was, and now I don't think I want to go back to an OEM Subwoofer now, just after seeing this chain reaction it caused.
