'05 5AT @ 145K miles.
Leaving the grocery store, put it in reverse, heard a horrible crunching/grinding noise.
Rolled into the middle of the parking lot, wouldn't shift or engage in any gear.
No previous issues or signs of failure.
Pressure switches, trans filter and 3x3 w/Redline type F (at 1K intervals) done ~20K ago.
Gotta take it to the dealer on Tuesday.

Make sure it's not an axle that let go. If the trans was freewheeling due to a broken axle and you shift into reverse, it will make all kinds of nasty noises.
At least check the fluid and see if the level is correct and if there's metal sparkles in it.

Thats weird, when i broke the axle on my TL and i put it in reverse i never heard any noise from the tranny. The motor was just revving & the broken axle part was free wheeling (while in neutral). I guess 6spds are just that different than 5ATs.
EDIT: OP,make sure they check out your lower ball joint to see if its worn out or not.
Mine was from being too slammed & having a worn out lower ball joint. I'm pretty sure its the same thing with Ricardo (Houston's) TL & I doubt it has to do with years.

Thanks!
It's a scary sound and feeling. Big relief to find out it was only the axle.
Reminds me of the time that a friend broke down on the exit ramp of the highway coming to my house. Says that the tranny made all of this noise and the car would not go anywhere or do anything. I went up there to help him get it out of the way. A good samaritan stopped to help us as well. We had him steer while we pushed the car. As our good samaritan was getting out of the car, I noticed that the car was in "Park" the whole time we were pushing. At that point, I knew his tranny was most likely not the culprit. Broken axle for him as well.
Glad that it wasn't your tranny either!

Broken axles are actually pretty common among hondas. I've seen it with the accords/civics and on a lot of integras in the past.
You can usually tell if you hear a clicking noise when making turns. I always do a couple tight circles when test driving any car before purchasing to check it out.
I think generally what happens is the rubber boot tears, and you get dust and dirt in the ball bearings (which causes the clicking noises) and eventually it will fail, and like IHC said, it makes a pretty nasty noises and the car won't go. It happened on my brother's 01 Passat, and ball bearings flew everywhere.
Anywho; glad it wasn't your trans!
