Transmission dead...need direction

Well, my transmission (5AT) gave up the ghost. Went to exit from highway and gassed it a little to get over and it downshifted to a higher than normal rpm like a slipping clutch would do. Turned to go over the bridge near my house on a slight incline and it literally seemed like it wasnt going to make it over the hill. Got home and let it sit for a while then went and drove and all gears except for 1st seem to be slipping now. I have already done the 3x3, and the pressure switches along with the filter and I am at 120k. I am in Dallas and have an Acura mechanic that will swap out my tranny for $400. I just need to come up with one. Do I get new or rebuild? Who can I trust to buy one from?

sorry to hear

by new, you mean a brand new transmission, or a different one to replace yours?

From what I hear, rebuild is better than buying used.

Any other symptoms the week before it gave out?

There's a rebuilt one on ebay from a trans shop in SC that supposedly has upgraded parts for $1500 plus shipping.

I'm on the same boat with you brother my just went due to redline fluid being defective. Car is at the shop right now mechanic gave me 3 year/ 100,000 mile warranty all for 3500 I got a rebuild price for 3400 and 12,000 mile warranty... I suggest buy new from certified transmission just for warranty sake!

^redline fluid being "defective", what do you mean by that? Just asking because I noticed problems only once I switched to Redline. Doesn't mean I'm blaming it for the ultimate failure, but I'm trying to understand what effect it may have had.

OP, I had my tranny rebuilt last month with 2yr ATRA warranty. I did a TON of research and thinking about the decision and I wanted to find the BEST shop in the NY area and I think I found it. I started an extensive thread last year about it. I will update it soon with all the details but the point is; so far so good. I paid quite a bit but still way cheaper than Acura. The shop is very reputable, great owners and the warranty sealed the deal. Car is running like brand new. I am glad I didn't do a junkyard swap or Acura swap. So far......

Check his fluid thread. His ATF looked like a slurpee.

Can you share the name of the place where you had it rebuilt? Also what did it run you?

Hey for what it's worth im in Central NJ and my girls transmission in her 06 Auto TL went back in January.( I have an 04)

We found a guy on craigslist that works for Aamco Transmissions full time and does work on the side. He completely rebuilt the transmission for $1500 R&R and drove it back to us. He was near Philly in Paulsboro , about an hour drive to drop it off to him from where i stay. I was skeptical about trusting him at first but after googling his name I found he really did work there and has for many years. Almost 2 months later and the car drives excellently.

If my trans in my 04 was to go i would definitely take it to him again for $1500. If you have any questions ask away.

I donno where you are in PA but i just drove 27 hours to Colorado from NJ so im desensitized now to long drives lol.

I felt the rebuild was worth it for $1500. You can either bring him the transmission and he'll rebuild it for $1050 or you can get the car to him and he'll take it out rebuild it and put it back and its $1500.

The only thing is he needs it for a week 7 day minimum. This is actually really good information for anyone local to NJ. He was honest with me and saved me from spending $3400 so I'm recommending him to everyone i hear talk about a transmission problem around me.

I was going to use the Accord v6 07 transmission but i thought it would be wiser to rebuild it then just put one in that I don't know the history of. Hope I could help

This is good to know as I am in central NJ myself. I'll bookmark his page. My 02 Tls torque converter has been acting up so if it gets worse maybe I'll contact him and see if he would be willing to do the AV6 swap.

im in Bethlehem Township which is by I-78 about 10 miles from NJ border.
According to mapquest he's about 1.5 hrs away from me.

Thats great to know after that drive you feel confident enough in the rebuild. Seems like a reputable guy as I've found other forums where members had their trans rebuilt by him and have nothing but positive things to say.

Did he tell or show you exactly what failed with your trans?

I like the fact he drove the vehicle to you. Really shows confidence and skill in his work.
i'm going to shoot him an email but first I want to see if my insurance will cover the tow to him.

btw, since I have to replace my trans mounts and I have accumulated those parts. That might be a good time to have it replaced.

Yeah my 02's orig trans was replaced in 05 with around 55k miles with the 'updated' one. It has 181k now so not so bad I guess.
I do have my legend in the signature. I've owned it 7 years now. It is a 6MT and still a baby at 40k miles. I also have a 6MT GS sedan
