strange noise

Hi,

Can anyone help me out?

I have an 05TL with 65K miles and the past two months I've been hearing/feeling a strange noise from the gas pedal. It happens once in a while so its hard to bring into dealer to have diagnose when it doesn't happen frequently.

The noise is kind of hard to describe, but I will do my best. It feels like a pumping or jerking motion I get from the gas pedal that lasts for at most 2-3 seconds. Kind of like when the car is out of gas and about to give up.

Like I said, it doesn't happen a lot, but when it does, it doesn't feel right. I know somethings going on.

Any idea what it could be?

I haven't changed gas stations, I go to any Chevron that's close and I've never used anything less than super.

I've done all the oil changes or services when its time.

If you want to try doing something yourself, fun a can of seafoam through the gas, the oil and if you want a brake booster line. Seafoam is a engine cleaner that will clean up any carbon buildup, clean up all valves and pistons of gunk, clean clogged fuel injectors and get rid of water in gas or "purify" the gas to a much better state. For more info, search for a thread titled:
Seafoamed the TL, it should be in the second generation section. I used it on my car at 30K and it gave some of the cars MPG and performance back.

The whole car pumps and jerks, or just the gas pedal?
When does it do it, cruising at constant speed, speeding up, slowing down, while shifting gears? Is it more of a stumble, then the car recovers? Is the check engine light on? More info would help.

I guess you can call it a stumble too. I can feel it through the gas pedal and the dash board. It mostly happens during the mid afternoon and late evening hours after I've parked it for a couple of hours. Yes it starts and then recovers. Only less than 50mph does it happen, so it doesn't do this on the freeway.

usually ive noticed it happens after I've accelerated and lifted my foot off the gas and the sensation starts right as I step on the gas again but before I actually step on the gas.

The TL's gas pedal is a "drive-by-wire" system, which means that the pedal is not actually connected to any part of the engine. All the gas pedal does is activate an electronic sensor. That sensor is read by the car's computer and the throttle body is electronically opened or closed accordingly. Just FYI.

Is it only when the car is in motion?
Does it seem fine when you barely step on the gas in park?
Is it hesitating because it is downshifting to 4th? It didn't used to act like this?

Did it start suddenly, or is it gradually getting worse?
No new lights are on in the dash?
Has the transmission fliud ever been changed?
Do a search here for the proper proceedure, I think it's a drain and fill a few times to get all the fluid out; a flush is not recommended.

it might b the fuel pump relay. go to ur dealer and get the new "updated" relay, it should b blue and say mitsuba or something like that on it. the relay is located behind the drivers kick pannel, its the first blue one closest to the drivers door right above the fuse box. dont know if this is the problem buts its a pretty cheep and easy try!!!

It hasn't gotten worse, but it still happens. Not a lot, but when it happens it feels like crap.

Anyways, I don't think I've ever had the transmission fluid changed because the computer never suggested it. That's funny, a mechanic friend of mine suggested I do a transmission change as well. He said it couldn't hurt. I think I will try that.

It could be the trans fluid is degraded, and that might cause a shudder when it shifts. That's a little unlikely, since the MID never said to change it.
If it's more of a stumble, like the engine dies and recovers, that points more toward an engine related thing.
You never said - is the check engine light on? You can go to autozone or similar and get codes pulled for free. Let us know what the code(s) are.
