It sounds like POWERSTEERING NOISE!!!!

I am going to be taking my car to dealer this friday. Over the last 4 days, its been kinda cool here in Miami. Its been at the lowest so far abot 48 degrees. So at first and I still do think it has to do with the cold weather.

In the mornings, I start my car and then walk about 6 feet away from it to unlock my gate to get out of my car port. And then I hear this loud noise. I get in my car and turn my steering wheel and it gets louder. (If any of you have ever had a FORD AREOSTAR(sp) van, you know how the steering sounds when you turn it) But this sound is about 3 to 4 times LOUDER. I think there is something wrong with power steering pump or belt. Could this be possible? Any else had this issue in the cold? It has fluid, so that cant be it.

If you open the hood, and stand in front of car over looking engine, the noise comes from the left side, close to the (firewall, i think its called). Its that were the power steering pump or belts are?

well if its getting louder when you turn the wheel, that does sound like a power steering issue to me.
lets hope that its still doing it when you bring it to the dealer....

Thats the thing, after about 15 minutes of driving it goes away. Thats why it came to mind that it might be the weather. But its not normal you know..

Its like after it gets warmed up it stops.!! I also hope its doing when i get to dealer. Or i hope they park it and then when they get to it, it does it again. Cuz i hate it when it does it to me and the dealer cant find the issue.

well took the car in today, lets see what they tell me. The assistant manager told me that if they see its something obvious, like leaking, cracked or whatever, they will change it at no cost, warranty covers it. But if they cant duplicate it, sorry. Sucks!!!

that's bs if they don't replace it. I've got the same noise but just haven't found the time to bring the car in yet for replacement. Another member on the board already got his replaced under warranty about a month ago......don't let the service mgr pull that crap on you.

btw, I believe the other member's car had similar mileage as mine....around 50k. feel free to search the threads and you'll find his and my separate threads regarding this.

If your PS pump is whining, chances are the o-ring on the side pump can't hold a seal properly. Since the seal isn't properly set, air gets into the pump and makes the PS fluid "bubbley".

Pop your hood, take off the top of the PS fluid resovoir and check the fluid (Make sure the car has been on / driven for at least a minute or so, DO NOT take off the cap if the car is on)

Just got my power steering replaced under warranty...had the same whining noise so I took it to the dealer and they checked the o-ring, which they replaced, but the whine was still there after the test drive so they went ahead and did the whole 9 yards on it. Don't let them push you around, it should be replaced without a problem!

gen3 has a recall for the ps hose- a bad fitting may leak and spray on the exhaust
They replace the hose- and if you have the oring whine, tell them and get it replaced too!

Cold weather is probably not the issue as here in Colorado over the past few weeks it has been as cold as 5 below and my PS has had no problems.

PLease post what you find out so we can all learn.

Thanks

I have the same problem now for around 2-3 months. Whining noise goes away after about 15 minutes. Fluid looks bubbly. I have 130k miles on a 2005 TL with nav. I'm in NY. The dealer wants 500.00 to replace. I wish there was a cheaper fix as i really cant afford this right now.

Uhhh-- did you have the steering hose recall done?

And several of the dealers had lazy techs who failed to replace the o-ring during the recall hose install, resulting in PS whine, air in the system, etc. If the same dealership that is giving you the $500 quote also did the recall, pull up a couple of threads from here and show them that the o-ring needs to be changed as well.

Welcome to AZ, and G/L.

Guys,
There's lots of existing threads on this problem. It is a simple 0-ring that needs to be replaced and it should be done free of charge as part of the power steering hose recall.

See this thread for more detail: https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-problems-fixes-114/04-tl-5at-power-steering-whine-695741/

^I know this is an old thread, but does anyone know if this is a TSB, or recall? I have the moan from the power steering when cooler outside, and goes away within a few minutes.I had the power steering recall performed by dealer, well over 1 1/2 yrs ago. I also did the o-ring fix ~8 months ago for the same issue. I hope it is just the o-ring.

I'm having the same exact issues. I will search the forum and the web. If I find anything, I'll post back. I'm looking for an 2006 though.

Same issue on my 04. I had it "fixed" last year, took it to a shop they said the resevoir (sp?) was cracked so they replaced. i thought it was fixed but i guess they prob just got the air out and now that it has air in it again and the cold weather is here the noise is back. Is the O-Ring something you can do yourself? I have the service buletin from Dec 07 but i don't see the anything about the steering pump in there
