That is pipe going to the AC compressor. The gas you saw was freon, easy way to make sure its that is turn on the AC, if it doesnt cool then you lost all the freon/refrigerant form you AC system.

That's a power steering hose. Have you had the recall done? This happens and eventually it can cause a fire. Recall is free.

Recalls are free regardless of whether or not you're in your warranty.

also do ur car a favor and put the damn PS hose in the hook provided....and it wont sit on ur engine and wont smoke anymore...

While your at the dealership getting the power steerage hose replaced, have them check for any other recalls. Might as well get them ALL done while your there.

Danger!

You should take your car to the dealer yesterday if not sooner. I Hate Cars is right--that fluid is flammable and if the leak gets worse you could very easily have a fire. I lost a Mercury Sable from exactly that cause. A power steering hose (brand new) ruptured, blew hydraulic fluid on the exhaust manifold and the car went up like a torch. Now, it was already the worst car I've ever owned, and my most difficult problem was having to talk with the fire captain without a big smile on my face for fear he would suspect that I set it on fire deliberately. You're not in that position--I expect you would like to keep your car.

There's also a recall on the wiper motor, another fire hazard. Get that done too. A suggestion--carmakers don't issue recalls for their own amusement, but only if safety or operability is concerned. If you own a car that is subject to a recall, get it done.

Interesting. My friend's Taurus caught on fire for the same reason when I was younger and of course it was in front of a lot of girls.

I just took my TL to the dealership this morning for this exact fix. About 2 weeks ago i noticed the power steering fluid reservoir losing fluid and thought I'd investigate where it was going. Low and behold, it was leaking from the end of that hose in the back of the engine. I didn't think it was that big of a deal at first, because i didn't see any smoke like you, but then i saw a video posted on these forums of a car in flames ... that freaked me out! Called the dealer, told them what was going on, and they said bring it on in and they'd have it done by the end of the day. Definitely get it done.. its a great thing you found out about it before anything really bad could happen

The 89 to Whatever 2G Taurus and Sable had the power steering pump on one side of the engine bay and the fitting for the steering rack on the other side. They were connected by a hydraulic hose about ten feet long that went down behind the engine and back up to the rack. Real engineering genius. Every 85-88 Taurus and Sable that hasn't been wrecked is still on the road somewhere, giving good service. The post-89's have all long since been turned into razor blades and porch furniture. Possibly the worst second act in American automotive history.

Our cars (no cars) use freon. They use R134a refrigerant and have since the mid-90's.
