I understand that the defusers break up the light but other than that are they necessary? Is it illegal not to have them? My lights are blacked out and cleared (without defusers) and I need to take them apart anyway so I am debating on putting defusers back in or not. Thanks!

 

I'm pretty sure that as long as you have a bulb that lights up amber you're good to go. I have switchbacks in mine that go from white to amber repeating and a ton of cops have seen it and said nothing. (More interested in my illegal tint )
