SC 04 TL Tranny Slipping

I need your help, my 04 AT TL has been sticking and slipping so to speak. A few times I have shifted from 2nd to 3rd and it stays in 2nd and like 5 or so seconds later it shifts. I have also had the problem where I was accelerating WOT and it would shift from 2nd to 3rd on it's own It has done it alot from 2nd to 3rd and even a few times from 3rd to 4th.

I really have noticed it much more since cold weather I have basically all mods available SC kit exhuast , race pipe, jpipe, voltage stabalizer, ground kit, and Lightweight crank pulley etc. It has so much more pull in cold weather abviously the tranny cant handle it? So Im asking what other people with the same situation have done? My tranny is not covered should I have tranny replaced or rebuilt, I heard the silenoids can go bad, I have the oil jet cooler that acura installed, was considering Comptech transmission cooler. Any advise is taken. Also could there be any adjustment for this Tranny. The oil is still pink smells fine.

sounds like the clutch packs for 2nd and 3rd- (the known weak point in these trans) are going to fail soon.
you have slippage now,,,what most of us experience jusssst before the flashing D5 light and the tcs/abs lights come on, maybe it goes into 2nd gear on the freeway by itself- very exciting

The external oil jet kit was to provide more oil to the 2nd gear set, not the clutch packs- it was a different issue and was a recall.

A trans cooler isnt going to solve the problem either, it wont hurt with all the power you are trying to put thru it, but its not a cure

You will have to rebuild yours, cant buy them brand new `crate style` like a chevy engine, and junkyard units are going to need a rebuild sooner or later~
There are no special clutches to install either- and its really a problem of more internal space for more parts is what it needs. You do buy the same parts acura uses- latest upgrades in everything

in early 2005, acura made a change to the actual case oil channels which has helped greatly
If you decide to get a -yard unit and rebuild it, look for blue painted bolt heads on the main trans bolts- thats the indicator of acura rebuilt, if you can determine if it was done after mid 05 thats the better one to choose from a pile

yes there are a couple of external selenoids you can remove and try to clean, or if it looks really bad- replace- $50
Are you running Honda ZR1 trans fluid??
dex3 eats the trans and must be completely cleaned out with the famed 3x3 drain refill drive repeat method per the owner book

To know for sure whats going on inside- take a 4 oz sample of trans fluid and send to www.blackstone-labs.com--test kits sent free to you, $25-35 for analysis and report.
They mass spectrograph it and can tell you if bits of clutch fiber are in the oil- thats a signal of trouble ahead

If its good then some bizzare shifter problem- maybe a shift microswitch under the shifter is bad- they fail on their own, and if any liquid is spilled in the cup holders or shifter it runs right to 3 microswitches that run the system

How many miles and did you buy it new? Has it had fluid changes as required? Before you start fooling with it why not take it to the dealer and see what they say? It may be worth ~$100 to get an estimate. The transmission has a reputation and might qualify for factory help on repairs.

No luck

Yeah I bought it used, and the warranty is out, I have NOS to top of the SC kit and everything else. SO it seems to be a cold day in hell before they cover that. I already tried as patient and tactful as possible. I had it flused twice since I got it. I didn't go with the Redline high temp had tranny shop tell me I would be better of without and use regular honda fluid so I did. Yeah I also heard of some Dr. evil tranny upgrade. I plan to call but im quite budgeted these days. I found a used tranny on the net they claim a lil over 20,000 miles for about a grand think thats my best option of what I can afford.

I never really use the NOS who knows since it's been cold and yes Im driving like a stole it!! It's been alittle loose. I could probably drive it like Mr. Rodgers and it'll last a couple more years but. As we know speed can be addictive.

Ohh I was told that you could only usea 04 to go on a 04 will a 05 or 06 direct bolt on with no problems, and how much should I plan to spend for install. My uncle has a lift air tools etc. worked on my brothers spyder, Is it extreamly a hard swap or shoould I see if I can save there too and have him help?

Sounds like you know where you stand
AFAIK the auto from all years w/3.2 V6 should fit without problem, good luck.

i'm starting to have the same problem when going from 2nd to 3d gear it feels like the car is stauling or stuttering. Its really getting annoying. I was going to change the tranny oil to see if that will help. So 06 TL's have the better tranny? oh yeah its auto with 30k on a 2004

dont bother changing the trans fluid- just get to the dealer
Take the tech on a test drive so you can demonstrate when it does it

04 has the same probs from gen2 trans, see that `tranny failure` thread- just the last few pages
Thread is several years old~ and grows every day still
