Rust On Wheels / Brake Parts

Rust On Wheels / Brake Parts
All four of my wheels on my 2007 TL have rust of them. The brake parts on my TL also have rust. Is this normal for a car that's only 1 year old? How would I go about fixing this problem? Take it to the dealer?
Yes, I know. My car hasn't been washed due to the cold weather.

My lug nuts are rusting too, I got my car in November of '06 so my car is a year and 3 months old. Brake rust on the rotors is normal, almost every car in the NE has that, and the calipers look like they're oxidizing too, I'm not sure if mine are, I'll check later. Yeah you're lugs are a bit more rusted than mine.

This is what happens to cars that get salt on them from those hard winter days. Brake rotors will rust like that. Looks like the lugs are in need replacing. Try to keep the salt off the car.

I understand rust on the rotors and calipers - but this much on the lugs and lock in one year? I agree with mmade22 - it must be the harsh chemicals in your area. I don't think a rust remover/cleaner will do it - won't restore the finish coat.

Take it to the dealer and ask them to replace the lug nuts. Although it's common for the rotors to have rust I'd say that that's an excessive amount of rust on the lug nuts for a 1 year old car. Unless you've had your wheels taken on and off several times in that 1 year.
It’s an eye sore and it's nothing for the dealer to replace.

Thats what they make caliper paint for, puts an end to the surface rusting and can be used on the exposed parts of the rotor as well. $10 for a kit at parts stores
Wax your wheels and lugs with synthetic- liquid wax is easy to use here- and that should help prevent further probs.
Warning to NJ drivers- desper's 05 spent 2 years there, and the rotors were stuck on like you could not believe. Pull everything apart and apply caliper grease to anything not being painted! Especially- remove rotor and grease where it contacts the metal ring in the center.
When you go to change brakes later you will understand

Thats normal rust on the nuts .. dealer won't replace them .. its your job to keep them clean.
Also of the nuts have been removed with an impact that stars the rust process.
Take them off one at a time and clean them with NevrDul then give them a coat od NuFinush Liguid sealant..

Sorry I have to disagree. I'll be returning my 04 TL that I've had since Feb 2004. My lug nuts have seen the impact many times. Many tire rotations, tire replacements in the 4 years and they are not rusting like slicks are.
Slicks car is 1 yr old its not much at all to ask the dealer to replace them when he's in for his next service (tire rotation).

I would understand if it was only 1 or 2 lug nuts, but all 16?! This bad?! If the dealer doesn't do anything for me, how much would it cost to replace 16 lug nuts? I tried finding them on the Honda eStore, but I couldn't.
BTW you would have 20 lugnuts includng the locks.

I agree with TLMcLovin. I have the following cars parked in my driveway and none of them are showing rust on the lug nuts.
1. Lexus GS
2. Mazda 3
3. Honda Civic
4. BMW X5
5. BMW 7 Series
6. Jeep Liberty
All of the above cars are older than my TL. The Mazda 3 is my girlfriend's and the Honda Civic is my sister's. They never clean or take care of their cars. I just cleaned my car 3 weeks ago. I just hope that the dealer replaces them because I really don't want to spend $75 - $100 on lug nuts ( I might be way off on the price, but that's what I assume they'll cost ).

I am seeing a trend, possibly subpar metals used when the manufacturer made a certain batch of nuts?!
Take it to the dealer, they may change them out in good faith. You go to the dealer for your service? Thats usually when they do it without hesitation

WD-40 is not a "rust remover". It displaces water (WD = Water Displacement), thereby delaying rust formation.
But, if the chrome/coating is deteriorated, they'll just rust again.

did you know the 40 part was because it was test formula #40
the things you learn on acurazine !
And its real secret is finding 40 things it Wont Do~

Wadding polish will also remove rust stains, as does WD-40. The petroleum distillates (kerosene) in both products, will remove most stains, just like it helps loosen old stubborn nuts (dont get funny on me) with rust. It will also help prevent it by displacing water before it has a chance to settle with other petroleum products. But you would have to keep it on there for it to work. WD-40 is an amazing product, and should be in every trunk or glove box. Need to remove a quick water stain? Try a little WD on a Microfiber and dab, then wipe away. It will help dissolve the calcium and lime in hard water. (Try it on shower doors (if you can handle the scent. It really breaks through hard water and soap scum).
Another option is, if you wash the car, make sure you take it for a spin around the block after you have dried and quick detailed it. This will help in removing any standing water in sensitive areas.

Had the exact same problem with my 07 TL (rusty lugnuts), took it in to the dealer today and they replaced all the lugnuts. I went to Autozone and bought some nanotech wheel wax and applied that to all the wheels/lugnuts hopefully that keeps em clean for a while.

about the areas near the brake hubs and other suspension compnents under the car etc. that rust....
It just shouldn't be so....My car is just 1 1/2 yrs. old and has the same problem as everyone else's. How do I know? I look at every other TL and they all have the same problem; and it is considered "normal". Why do we have to put up with this? It makes our cars look so cheap. Mercedes owners would shriek if someone told them it was "normal" for theis cars.
Anyone who has painted these parts, has it successfully stayed rust-free for a long time? I had the same problem on a car I used to own back in college and I painted all those parts silver. Every 6 months I had to touch it up though. I am planning on tackling it the same time when I paint my calipers.

As far as the OP and the lug nuts ... well thats a little different.

rocky-
yes you can paint the center and outer edges of rotors as well as the caliper brackets and the calipers themselves.
Warning- some parts get very hot- like the edge of the rotor
Use BBQ 1100 degree paint as a base there- then some duplicolor caliper paint if you want a gloss finish- regular caliper paint good to 600 degrees.
If its metal- rough up the surface- mask off other parts and have at it~
Give the rims 3 coats of synthetic car wax to help cut down brake dust problems
Some members even get plastic paint and do the inner fender liner panels too.
You can use synthetic car wax on the mudguards to- keeps them shiny and cleaner
