Replaced APP Sensor Today

Per a previous post, I finally replaced my APP sensor today (2005 TL 6-spd w/77,000 miles). BTW, my car was not throwing any codes. I recently purchased the car, first manual Acura / Honda, so I wasn't sure if throttle behavior was normal or not. Huge Improvement - well spent $100 (and probably 30 - 45 min labor). The throttle response during the first 10% - 20% of pedal application is now smooth. I can hold slow, constant speeds without jerkiness, and I can accelerate slowly and smoothly if I want to ... I'm not sure if the issue is with the position sensor electronics (i.e. getting noisy with age), or the spring in the sensor getting weaker (and therefore being more affected by bumps, etc). Very satisfied I did this.

Ok thanks for posting this up. I have what is I guess a similar issue with my 08 TL Type S 6mt where the car gets kind of jerky on acceleration (mostly noticeable in 3rd gear but have felt in others as well).
Best way to describe it is as if someone is kind of tugging then letting go of the car as im trying to accelerate normally. Its overall lurchy acceleration. Has nothing to do with shifting its all while fully in gear with foot off clutch.
Does my explanation sound exactly how your car was? I have no codes and the car runs 100% perfectly otherwise.

Thanks very much.

James

JTS97Z28 - yes it does. Can you hold a steady speed at very little throttle (try 20 in 2nd or 30 in 3rd)? If you can get 3rd / 30 to feel jerky trying to hold pedal constant, then put cruise on and see if it goes aways (I believe cruise begins working at 25 MPG).

Also, I used the factory manual procedure for re-installing the cable cable - I ended up moving the adjustment nut probably 2 - 3 mm from its original position.

I have noticed while trying to hold a steady speed that occasionally there is a jerkiness only at slower speed. I have tried the cruise control method for acceleration only and the acceleration jerkiness has occured while accelerating using cruise control. This was originally my reason thinking that it was NOT the APP sensor because I thought that if the car has a slight jerkiness during acceleration using cruise then that sensor is not used. I will give the cruise control steady speed around 25 to 30mph a try and see how it feels.
Not sure if you followed my other thread but I have eliminated a few other possibilities since I was able to swap some exact parts from my wifes accord V6. Its for sure not spark plugs, coil packs, EGR valve, PCV valve. I tried driving with 02 sensors, knock sensor, and IAT sensors disconnected (individually ofcourse) and the car still jerked so I assume it eliminates those as well. I have not tinkered with the APP sensor at all although I did snug up the cable just a tad to remove a little play.
You got me excited now! on my next break I will go try the steady speed cruise control method at slow speeds to see what happens.

Thanks,
James

Well I did some messing around and I was able to get the car to hold 25mph and 30mph pretty steadily using the gas pedal there may have been a few very minor jerks here and there but the road wasnt perfectly smooth either so it was tough to say. I will say though that while cruise was on the car was smooth in 2nd and 3rd gear at 25mph and 30mph with cruise engaged.
So overall I wasnt able to come up with much with this test, however my problem was more so in the lack of smoothness in acceleration rather than jerkiness trying to hold slow speeds. I thought I remember the car jerking a couple times while accelerating using cruise control last week. So hopefully that doesnt eliminate the possibility of it being the APP sensor, but at the same time I cant think of anything else that would do such a thing when the car is technically running optimal otherwise.

I wonder if the APP sensor in my wife's 04 Accord V6 is the same part number as my 08 type s. Other parts were identical and if that's the case with this one to I can do a quick swap and see what happens. I either find another sensor to eliminate or find the problem for free. I will check it out.

Well it's unfortunately a different part number between my wife's accord V6 and my TL so no free swapping on this one. Dealer is of no help and I hate to drop 100 bucks in a part that very well may be fine. I don't think you can return parts to the dealer I don't know.

OP, is your car still doing great with that new sensor? I wish I knew for sure if our symptoms were identical. I have a slight surge in my cars acceleration mainly felt in 2nd and 3rd gear. Feels like the car is pulling timing and putting it back in. Overall just an unsmooth acceleration, but seems to be intermittent as occasionally it will be a smooth accel.

Hello,

I am wondering if you guys resolved your issues. My problem sounds like James' and Kevins. Car seems to like barely any throttle where it drives fine or floored... Anything in between is choppy and inconsistent. After reading pages of the APP thread I rushed to a Honda dealer like a kid going for a new pack of Pokemon cards. Bought APP sensor and put it in hoping for a miracle. It didn't work. Other things I've done are checking compression, fuel pump and lifetime filter, changing spark plugs, taking intake resonator off, cleaning throttle body, king left muffler off, beating catalytic with a mallet, going to dealership multiple times. ECU firmware update made the engine run smoother and lag less but inconsistent throttle input persists, 19 at best mpg and lethargic performance remain. I hope someone can chime into the thread again. Leakdown test is next.

I think my car has a problem with the APP sensor as well. When i start my car, it surges forward. The surging scares me due to a small garage i park the car in to keep it from being vandalized again. Well anyways from what i have been reading the APP sensor may be the problem. I have no codes other than the O2 sensor. Can someone confirm this for me and verify the part number so I am sure of what I am going to order.

Anyone know what the labor time would be for this fix from the dealer? (I know they usually list that on their repair manuals). I got my dealership to price match (They wanted $212 for the part...online from acuraoemparts.com was $135). What I don't want them to do is gouge me on the labor part to make up for the price match. Yeah, I know people on here are saying it's easy and to do it yourself...but even my local Honda shop who I trust wasn't going to do it b/c of the adjustments needed. They didn't go into much detail but that told me there's more to it than meets the eye.

Interestingly all warning lights (VSA, malfunction) disappeared. I'll have to see if others are reporting periodic instances where it will definitely come back and it's better to just fix it. Problem is I can't use an OBD to find the error b/c it's gone now.
