Rearview Mirror Falling Off

I can't figure out how to tighten up my rear view mirror so it will stay up and not rattle off, I see the metal piece on the windshield where the bracket on the mirror attaches and slides on, but how do I tighten it so it stays firm?

I'm not 100% but I think it's just spring pressure, nothing to tighten. try pushing the metal bracket clips / spring outwards before snapping on mirror.. that should tighten it up.

what year TL do you have? 04 TL's had a TSB on them where the inner spring would warp and allow the mirror to vibrate and shake out of position.

I have 05 TL and when I put the car in reverse, the mirror just shakes really hard while viewing lower.

How do I fix this?

are you just talking about your side mirror? because it will do that if it is an "awkward" position when it goes in to the "reverse" mode. if you bring it in a little more so its not looking so far out then it may help some...

also, do you need to use your mirrors like that to reverse? i dont normally use that function unless i parallel park, which is rare, so usually i just leave the switch in the center position so neither side goes down.

I had the dealership check it out and he said it wasn't the issue with the spring in the TSB...the entire mirror needs to be replaced at $167...WTF?

Really? Are they just saying that? I can take some glue to it, I don't need a new mirror, the mirror works fine, its just falling off. Whatever. I had dealing with these people.

I know not to use glue or any adhesives, but still, why does an entire mirror need to be replaced from just falling off its base?

Just picked-up an 04 used at an Acura dealer. The rearview mirror was real loose and actually fell off the day I came to pickup the the car. They are replacing the entire mirror N/C. Told it can't be tightened.

Haha, Same exact situation as me when i got my used Acura TL, but it wasn't from a dealer... It shakes off every once and a while and I have to shove it back in place.. really annoying but I cant tighten it, and who wants to buy a $100+ mirror?

My rearview has been loose for a while (well, since the dealer replaced my windshield gaskets). It would vibrate in certain conditions and cause the overhead map light plastic to rattle. I asked for the service manual schematic for months on here and never got help.

Finally started messing with it.

1. Start by taking off the thin plastic cover on the back side of the arm facing the windshield - kinda looks like a paintbrush handle.

2. Behind this cover is a thin metal spring clip. Lift it up towards the window and simultaneously pull the entire mirror assembly down. Mine was really stiff and I had to jiggle it back and forth and eventually it would start sliding off the base.

3. The aluminum guide arms on the mirror that slide and lock on to the base were bent out a bit, allowing the play and rattles. You have to take a heavy set of pliers, like linemen's pliers, and bend the tabs back in. Be careful! They are very strong and have a little step at the end of the arm that might get damaged if you clamp and pull to hard in the wrong spot.

4. Re-assemble. I put a little thread tape around the base before sliding the mirror back on but I don't think this is necessary. I just didn't want mine rattling anymore.

Hope that helps.

Had the same issue when I bought my TL. It was a certified used car, so the dealer just put in a new one free of charge.
