Rear Bumper Sticking out

Just wondering if anyone else had this problem. My TL is less then 3 weeks old and the rear bumper, where it meets the passenger tail light, sticks out. I can put my finger in between the gap on the side of the car!!!! Seems like the fit and finish of these cars should be a lot better then this... Taking it to the dealer this afternoon....

you can put your entire finger in??? Post a picture so we can see exactly how big the gap is, it could be a loose clip...

Mine also has a small gap but on both sides. Took it to the dealer they told me that it is normal and nothing they could do about fixing it. I just took some black silicone and dabbed alittle on the crease and held it for a few seconds and I don't have the gap anymore.

Either some clips behind there are broken, or popped out that is why you are having that problem like that, or there is a bracket behind there that needs to be adjusted. If either of that doens't work I'd just suggest like was mentioned some 3m tape, or take some black silicone and bead it behind there.

That suppose to pop in easily, and stay there. There is a connection under the taillight, make sure it grasps it.

Did you get hit in the back?

Yeah either your clips are not in or they are broken, that's not normal. Your dealer might claim they are the result of some kind of damage though.

The clip is broken there. the bumper was taken at some point to do some repair or to install something, and it was not reinstalled properly.

My rear bumper is the same way. The 07/08's might have been more prone to do that. I have an 08 TypeS rear bumper and both sides have about 1/8" of "unevenness". I can press it in, but it still pops out about 1/8". I am thinking about inserting 2 washers under the rear bolts to shift back the bumper by about 1/8" inch and see if that allows it to snap in more firmly. And the clip is not broken. One is even brand new on the other side..

If the bumper is tight to the body and fastened to the clips then there is nothing wrong with the way the bumper is fitting to the car.

Then your problem must be the deck lid is to far forward. Simply move the deck lid back to match the bumper as necessary.

Loosen and tighten the hinge bolts one side at a time to control the movement better and to "walk" the deck lid slowly back to where it needs to be.

Rinse n repeat for the other side.

deck lid? Is that the trunk? If so, the trunk has nothing to do with the rear bumper. And it does not meet it anywhere. moving the trunk lid wont do anything

Mine is the same. Sticks out 1/10"
There's a bracket behind and one of the clips must be broken. Small 3M tape is the best bet but I left it alone.

Probably not broken. The bumper is just sitting too far forward or tilted up, and not grasping the clip on that top part. So, may have to shift the bumper around to get it to sit tightly. Or probably can use a gasket maker and let it basically glue it down. But taking it apart would be messy or tricky if you ever wanted to remove the bumper.. but I've seen people do that before.. but they used a really hard glue. It would be better to use a silicone rubber or something that can be pried apart...but best solution is to try and shift the bumper and avoid "glueing" it down.. or just live with it..

I, recently, installed tail lights.
instead of buttoning up from the middle then to the sides, i bolted up the wheel well first!
that seemed to have put it more flush than what i had before

Ya it's probably something like tbat.. or another possibility would be to loosen all the bolts and tape down that corner in the perfect position, then re-tighten the bolts and screws and plastic thingamajigs

Something else to try, if the top of the bumper under the tail light on the rear (not the side) is pressed into the tail light real far it might allow the side to move forward, and that would create slack.. So my thoughts are that this forward position is causing the side of bumper to not grasp the clip because it's not really touching it. So, try to pull out the bumper on the rear of the car. Like maybe use a spacer somewhere under the tail light or maybe a washer under the bumper where those 2 hidden bolts are located..? Just tossing out ideas.

Yes, deck lid is trunk. Specifically trunk lid.

According to your pics in Post 16 the bumper is not flush with the tail lamp and possibly the not flush with deck lid.

If you bumper is mounted to the left rear side bumper mounting bracket properly and the bracket is mounted to the rear body panel properly, then the rear bumper is where it's suppose to be. It's a moot point in trying to move the bumper anymore. You would have to bend the rear body panel inwards and hope the rest of the panel doesn't move inwards too... Tail lamp.

It's much easier to move the tail lamp and deck lid back to match the bumper vs trying to move the bumper inwards unless the bumper is not mounted to the bumper bracket properly.

It's much easier to move the tail lamp out and the deck lid out too to match the rear bumper.

The tail lamp mounting area needs to be push out gently and the deck lid is adjustable.

This is a bit dated, but I wanted to chime in and say that the passenger side of my bumper also stuck out about 1/8''. I removed the bumper today to install my A-Spec kit, so I figured this would be a good time to determine the source of the issue.

After removal, I noticed that none of the tabs/clips were broken and I was not able to reinstall the bumper and get this clip to stick under the tail light. I resorted to a single piece of 3M double sided tape and it's as good as new.

Just my two cents...
