Problems with 3G TL...slugish/poor MPG

Alright guys. I think I have a few problems with my 3G TL. Not sure what the problems are but its becoming annoying. I had a few people drive my car and I was right in my suspicion my car is not driving normal.

Some information. 2008 Acura TL, 23k miles. Always use premium gas. Bought it with 20k miles 2 months ago.

I constantly get 16-18 MPG. I know 18 is normalish and I know many will criticize my driving but driving other cars with bigger engines then the TL I get 22-24 in them. Makes no sense why the MPG is so poor in my TL. I have had other people from my family drive the 3G and its the same. They also find it slow and sluggish and the MPG is the same.

The car does not feel like it has a 3.2 V6 engine. I have to jam the pedal to the ground to get it moving. Feels like I have no low end. Passing cars on the highway makes me feel like I am driving a 1.4L 4 banger.

Not only is the car sluggish the transmission never seems to know which gear it should stay in. If I want to overtake someone on the highway the gear always downshifts then suddenly upshifts the car bucks like its not in gear. Ride is not comfortable by any means.

I had no service records with the car. Another issue is exhaust drone. Not sure if that is normal but I don't have a aftermarket exhaust. Around 40-50mph the car drones like crazy...I don't think that's normal for a stock exhaust.

What suggestions can you guys give me? Can it be the fuel injectors which is causing car to be slow and sluggish? That could explain the terrible MPG.

I drove a 2004 TSX the other day with 140k miles and that felt much faster and solid then my 3G TL.

1. What tires and tire size are on the car?
2. Have you used a fuel cleaner at all yet?
3. What is the air pressure in the tires?
4. When's the last time the oil was changed? Oil life left on MID?
5. Do you have anything heavy in the car like a sound system?
6. How hot is it where you live?
7. Do you park your car outside or inside?
8. What color is your transmission fluid?
9. Have you disconnected the battery at all or tried a "gas pedal reset trick" at all?

in my 18+ year old integra my catalytic converter took a dump and blocked a portion of my exhaust. The result was significantly reduced power. Symptoms included white powder/ash on my tail pipe.

Perhaps an exhaust problem/blockage maybe?

I was going to suggest that. You don't mention what type of driving you do. FYI, I bought my '08 base last June with 17K on it, seemed a tad slow on the test drive until I put some premium in, and a K&N (I know, I know...). I now have 28K I think...I commute several days a week, 90 miles round trip, highway, usually going the opposite way of the rush. So typically I'm doing 80, and the car usually feels like it doesn't want to do less. Over the course of the 11K miles or so I've put on it, my trip computer is telling me that I'm averaging 24 mpg at 35 mph. Again, you'd have to evaluate against your own driving habits, typical speed, gearing, stop and go, etc...but IMO, the TL should not feel "sluggish", unless your other car is one of the newer 400+ hp pony cars, lol.

Having my air conditioning on when its very hot outside makes my car drive like a Civic. That's about all I can contribute.

Exhaust drone seems to be a common thing. When I drive on this one particular road near my house at about 55MPH, the drone is incredible.

I got my car two and a half months ago and i thought there was something wrong with it cuz the gas mileage was so bad. But everyone said it's because of the way i drive and that's just how it is. So now i've been trying not to drive too much. lol

BTW, is it normal how there's like a 1 or 2 seconds lag whenever you press the gas hard before it pulls? I have an 08 TL-S with 60k km on it.

it shouldn't be 1-2 seconds but a few miliseconds.

I'm sure its not a full second or two but it probably could feel like that. The car drops a gear and the VTEC kicks in (no pun intended). That's something I noticed when I first got my car- the power delivery isn't nearly as smooth as some other cars and tends to take a fraction of a second longer to really get going. That and there is no low-end torque.

Resetting the ECU. Key in the ignition, turn to ACC, push the gas pedal down for 30 seconds. Turn car off.

You'd probably laugh if you tried to drive a 5AT TL. I have a feeling its quite a different experience.
