Possibly tranny slipping or else?

So i have a 04 TL 5AT with 113k miles. 3rd and 4th switches had been done along with a 3x3 redline D4 flush at 97k miles.

So recently, It happens durin 2-3 shift, however it's not during the upshifting like many others out there. It happenes when after it shifted into gear when the rpm needle return to lower RPM. It would rise slightly then drop slightly, and sometimes would jump maybe 500 RPM and stay then climb on as the car accelerate.

Is this considered a slip?

It's probably the normal torque converter locking up after it shifts to third, especially if it's mostly at light throttle.

What you're seeing is the transmission output speed matching the input speed, the torque converter beoming more efficient with more speed, rpm, and throttle, and then the converter locking up. You shouldn't be able to feel it, only see it on the tach.

your right, i dont really feel it at all other than seeing it happens.
So i should give the car more throttle then? This happens when i let the car shift at 2k rpm.

So my tranny is acting normal according to what you said?

It's normal. The torque converter clutch usually won't lock up under heavy throttle so you shouldn't see that dip. You will still see rpms hang around 2,000 for a second or two when you floor it off of a dead stop as the converter sits at it's stall speed. Once the wheel speed and output shaft speed match or exceed engine rpm or input shaft speed, the rpms climb as normal.

There's no need to drive harder to stop it, it's completely normal. Every car does it except for a car with a high stall like my GN. It will just sit at 2,800rpm steady state during normal acceleration because the stall speed of the converter is higher than the shift rpm. The TL stalls around 2,000rpm and will typically shift from 2,500rpm to 3,000rpm so you see rpms hang for a while then begin to climb, then go back down when the clutch locks and then rise again as the car picks up speed. Just drive it normal, every TL does it, you're one of the few that are observant enough to notice.

Agreed. Totally normal. My SBC powered RX-7 had a 200-4R with the BRF valve body out of a GN. In such a light car with the power to weight ratio I had, it was very noticeable. I ended up adding a higher stall (2,800) as well and also added a switch on the shifter to lock the TC on demand.

you'll be able to tell if the transmission is slipping unnaturally if it does at least one of the following: RPM flares during downshifts (similar to applying gas and slipping the clutch in a MT) or the clutch never locks up at speed.

Fried my parents' odyssey transmission going up an incline on the 5 by six flags. i was doing 70 and looked down and saw the RPMs at something like 4k and my speed was gradually decreasing.

had the thing rebuilt, and now it doesnt slip all the time but it flares between shifts on an incline (driving up to mammoth mountain this was especially noticeable). we're getting rid of the car in a year after the rebuild warranty goes.
