Oil Pump Seal Leaking...
I recently went to the dealer to get an oil change and tire rotation before heading out of town, and upon completion they told me that I needed to replace my oil pump seal as it was leaking. They didnt tell me exactly how bad the leak was, but that I needed to be replaced. I also inquired about the 105k service as I now after having gone to the dealer am at 106k (2005 TL).
Has anyone else had to do such a repair on your car, they quoted me about 1000 dollars roughly and it would be an 8 hour job. Should I savely assume I have a little time before needing to do my 105k so I can use the money to do this seal? I know I need both but that would be nearly 2000 dollars all at once which I cant swing.

I always always always ask them to show me those kinds of problems. There's a leak? Where? How badly is it leaking? I haven't noticed my oil level change.... hahaha. I would also ask them to cut you a deal on the 105k service and the oil pump work (if that's actually required)
P.S. I got your PM, going to reply soon.

I mean, I dont mind doing the services, I do know that they might say that I need to replace the seal but it might not be a priority thing right now. Im going to do both services just not all at once. I just dont want something to happen when I am 3 hours away from home when trying to go back and forth at the moment. I was shocked that they told me that to replace a seal is 1000 bucks, but I guess thats the labor for driving acura...

Nah brah, that's just a difficult part to get to. Be glad you don't have a German vehicle lol. That's why I'm saying to get them both done at once. I bet they'll cut you a deal and you won't have to pay the full 1000.

Definitely. Do it when you do the timing belt. Typically, they only leak enough oil to be a mess. A few ounces will look really bad. There is some fire risk if it's getting to your catalytic converter.

The reason why your oil pump seal quote was $1,000 was because most of the cost you're paying is going towards labor just to get to it.
If you get it done at the same time as your timing belt service it will cost a lot less. It really doesn't make sense to skip it now and than pay a boat load later when the seal itself is pretty damn cheap $2.20

Lol paying $1,000 to get a $2 part to get put in.

So... what is needed to replace the seal.... is the same labor that you basically need to do to do the 105k timing belt service? thats interesting. Because the timing belt service with replacing the water pump was quoted at 795 bucks. Not replacing the water pump was quote at 495.
So direct me into my talking points for going ahead and addressing this situation since I have now been enlightened.

Do you notice any oil on the ground after parking overnight? If no, then I wouldn't worry about it.

I'll take a look under the ground and see what I see, and before I do the service I'll ask them to show me the leak.... Nonetheless I need to do the timing belt service... if the oil pump seal can be just tossed in when doing that... why not...

I have 2 very good friends that are ASE Honda techs. Both told me that it is uncommon for the front main to leak on the TL compared to other cars. As such, I am only doing my timing belt and water pump at the 105k service.
I agree with what the others are saying about access to the oil pump seal (it may be the front main seal or the o-ring that is behind the oil pump). Either leak should be a minor add-on when doing the 105k service since the timing belt has to come off to access both locations.

I just had to replace the oil pump seal as well as the front and rear main seals. Did at same time as timing belt. I was told the oil pan has to come off. No more leak! 166K miles

Hey man, look into a shop called Acutech. They are in Lake Park and work on everything but Acuras and Hondas seem to be their main line.
They quoted me considerably less than $1000 for the 105 service. They are also a vendor here if you need to PM them. They on Facebook as well.

1000 wasnt for the 105 service... that was to replace this oil pump seal. I called and spoke to the servie advisor and he said the labor required is totally different for the 105 and to replace this seal.
I'll see what im going to do, as they said recently that my drive belts all looked fine when I took it in last time. I'l do the 105k service in a month or so after I replace this seal issue that is going on.

And did you ever find any oil on the ground after parking overnight?

I'm in the same boat. Just got an oil change, and the tech noticed that I have a leak, which he showed me. For an engine that got an oil change just 4 days ago, the leak seemed pretty significant to me. I was quoted $487 to fix it. For the amount of oil that I saw leaking out, it seems like I'm gonna have to bite the bullet...and this is after dropping $467 for an oil change, transmission fluid change, coolant fluid change, front brake job, and a new CAI filter. Yay me.

I didnt look under my car to check for oil.... I always forget to look for it, I dont see why they would say its leaking if its not even if its only something minor. Im not going thru the dealer.. to same some money. I'll go back to then for the 105k service, then I can get this side done work looked over to make sure im good....
