Oil leak

Ok so I took it to the dealership for a oil change and requested a MPI report. In it they told me to replace the crankcase rear main seal as well as the oil pump gaskets. They quoted me 2500 for each leak (insane) so I took it to my local trusted mechanic and he says it’s a oil pan leak. Could it be that the dealership mistook the oil pan leak as both of those? Because my mechanic didn’t see any other leaks. He’s quoting me about 300$ for the fix . Thoughts please?

Can you go back to your tech and have him show you exactly where it's leaking? Really your best bet is to clean things up the best you can with brake clean, and depending how bad the leak is, either let it run til warm and then look for the leak (potentially very time consuming) or drive it for a couple days and then get to your trusted shop and have him show you the leak. Or at least, that will make it a bit easier for him to positively identify that it is the oil pan gasket.

Grab one of these, this makes finding leaks pretty easy.

ok I will do that. Do you think that the Lucas stop leak stuff would help in this case? It does say rear main seal on the bottle.

I went to him today and he told me it was the rear main seal . Couldn’t see it myself because we were both in rush but he said it would be around 450 to do the seal and the motor mounts . I found a product called blue devil rear main sealer . It’s not as thick as Lucas. Do you think I should try this before getting it fixed?

DO NOT ever put anything into the oil filler hole except engine oil. Those crappy lucas type fix it fluids are scary. Check out some youtube videos of that crap. And don't rush a diagnosis, do it again. The rear main requires alot more work than even a timing belt job people here pay too much for. It should be leaking where the transmission meets the engine.

How bad is the leak?
Some leaks are just best left alone if they are minor enough.
I have had a oil pump leak for about 4 years. Acura wanted $1600 to fix. I have left it alone and just monitored my oil levels. Not a problem for the past 100,000 miles. Cost = $0

very minor dripping. I just find some oil around the oil drain plug (not leaking there, just drains to lowest point). I do not get drips on garage floor and oil is not down between changes. I do smell burning oil at stop lights etc, but for $1600 I would still not do the repair if it were only a few drips per day. My car has over 250,000 miles so obviously not doing a big repair. I asked about combining the labor when they did the timing belt at 200,000 and they offered a couple of hundred off....I said no thanks.
Good luck
