New Starting Problem

Just recently, whenever I turn the key, it cranks and cranks, but won't start on that first turn. I shut the key off, turn it again, and presto! It starts right up! However, sometimes it will start on that first turn if I hold it cranking mode long enough.

Any thoughts gang?

So that usually indicates that your starter sounds like it is going out on you. Have you recently replaced it or know its age?

If that's true, then how come I appear to have full cranking power? Starter is the original, 14½ years, 296K miles.

The solenoid could be dying.

If his starter turns the engine every time with no issue...why is anyone focused on his starter? I would think this is electrical or fuel related.

- Turn key, starter spins engine, engine just doesn't fire
- Wait, turn key again, starter spins engine, engine finally fires

So that leads me to think battery is good and starter is good. Car either isn't getting fuel and/or spark...or at least thinks it isn't and therefore no fire condition.

Now.....if you turn the key and just let it sit for 30 seconds, and then try to start, will it fire right up?

I would rule out the starter as well. I'd pull a plug and check for spark but I doubt it's the plugs either. I think I see where Jackass is headed. Most likely fuel related. I'd check to make sure the pump primes every time you put the key in the accessory position.

Mine was doing this a few months ago. Check battery CCA...my voltage was fine but the cold cranking amps were low. Needed to replace.

Seems OK now. It must've been kind of like me after eating at a Mexican restaurant a few weeks ago. Bad gas!

Stay tuned ............
