Help, Car wont start!

So. About 2 weeks ago, i was in a rush and i tried to start my car, my fingers slipped and i let go and i tried again. At that moment i messed up my starter. So everytime i turned up my car, it made a god awful retched sound while starting up. And today i tried to start my car. All i hear is a winding sound. But not crank up.

Is my starter fully gone. Or is it just something minor?

What type of sound? a grinding sound? when you initially restarted your car, how long did a sound come on for? what kind of sound was that?

By the sounds of it, you hear the starter cranking, but the engine isnt turning over right? That means your starter is gone, but it shouldnt go that fast, especially if you only did it once, but what may have happened, you sheared off one tooth on the gear, and that applied stress to other teeth and those gradually failed. Have a friend try to start the car, and place your hand on the starter to see if it is turning.

To me, seems like you do need a new starter. sorry

Yes it was a grinding sound. It made the grinding sound for about 2-3 secs before the engine turned on.

Now it doesnt even make the grinding sound. It just makes a winding sound. Engine doesnt seem to crank or anything.

So most likely my starter is gone. How much will it cost to buy a new one?
Or should i buy a remanufactured one, and how much would that cost me?

Any websites i should go to?

Get a reman w/ warranty. Autozone sells reman duralast starters. It's $220 but if you bring in the old one (core) it's $160. You can pay the $220 upfront and then return later with the receipt and core to get your $60 back. It has a lifetime replacement warranty. Advance and Pep Boys probably have similar warranties on their starters as well. You want to look up reviews for each individual starter though because some companies have been known to use new cases so it looks new but the internals are old and have carbon buildup.

well.. the starter price is pretty standard - b/w $100 - $200. If there is internal starter damage then doing a rebuild yourself is not worth it unless you can get the parts fairly cheap, but you need some good shop tools to do real service on a starter rebuild. I'd save your pennies and get a new one / get a parent loan.

The TL is expensive.. what are you going to do if the tranny goes out?? If you can't afford a starter, you may want to think about repairs that may come up that will definitely be out of the budget and may leave you SOL... btw.. have you been in a Duramax turbo diesel.. that's nuts.. that would be a nice drop-in for the suburban.

You need a starter, its VERY similar to the 03+ MDX which has a VERY high failure rate.

I suggest you stay with OEM, its got a warranty from a reputable manufacturer- Honda.

lol.. $200+ for Honda reman or $400+ for a new Honda Starter and a 1yr warranty.. why would you get a 1 yr warrantied product when you can get a lifetime warrantied product for less???.. b/c it carry's Honda's namebrand??? The starter isn't difficult to replace on the 3G.. and if you ever encounter a failure or if it starts acting up.. take it out and get a new one.. no hassles / no extra costs.

Glad to hear!! - this forum is great for help on DIY fixes.. bad on the pocket book for mods but there are also some economical DIY mods that really make the car stand out..

Now do well in school and go into medicine or engineering so you can afford to put in a tranny when it fails..

You know what.. that sounds like a great idea.. and btw.. all great car clubs have a recipe section. You could start one!! My buddy and his 'vette buddies always talk shop, and the weirdest thing is they have a car club recipe section. One time he brought over these choco chip walnet cranberry cookies.. man those were fantastic.. made me want to come to their next meet. Funny thing is I'm pretty sure it wasn't one of the wives who started it. These guys love to cook!
