Hi, I have a good one for you guys. 2006 TL with 6 speed manual. I have what appears to be a intermittent flont end vibration, on the passenger side. It started after I hit a bad pot hole last spring (I have been living with it since).

The vibration tends to occur north of 70MPH. What is odd is this: I can set the cruise control at 75MPH, and the vibration will come and go: some times it is bad, sometimes it is smooth as glass, and this occurs on a long length of highway where I am not hitting the brake, etc. Just going along at 75MPH and it comes and goes.

Here are some things I have tried and some observations:

- I have tried different rims/tires on the front left, the vibration did not follow the rim/tire. If it had followed the tire/time, then rim/tire guilty

- acceleration does not seem to affect the vibration. I.e., if it is vibrating and a stomp on it, it doesn't get worse or better.

My guess is "axle" , but I am not 100% positive.

Would like to hear from the forum to see what others have to say and/or if anyone else has had this issue with their TL.

- putting the car in neutral does not seem to affect the vibration. That is, if it is in vibration mode, I put the clutch in, put in neutral, coast, still just as much vibration

- braking does not seem to affect the vibration, i.e., if i brake or not, it seems to not matter.

 

Pretty sure you have already narrowed it down and know what your next step is. Speed sensitive vibration that is not tied to the wheel/tire pretty much only leaves the axle or wheel bearing. Wheel bearing rarely causes vibration...it generally makes noise.

 

also check out the bushings on that side, if they are torn/missing they can cause some vibrations

 

any others wish to weigh in?
Is an axle replacement the next best step?

 

For as cheap as a CV axle is, it wouldn't hurt. Our CVs tend to develop some binding in both joints, and they can definitely cause vibrations at speeds if they get sloppy.

I had a similar problem.
I even bought new axles, but I tried a Road force balance and it took care of my problem.
It was a cheap options that worked for me.

 

What are you saying NetGnome? That the new axles didn't solve your vibration problem but the road force balance did?
