Front brake dragging
Front brake dragging
06 TL, 68k miles, original brakes, non-Brembo. This is my wife's car (I drive an S2000).
Last week I noticed a ton of brake dust on the right front wheel, probably 10x what was on the left front. When I drove it, I noticed an occasional roar under braking, and could feel a brake dragging/sticking at times. When I got it home, I pulled out a temperature probe and confirmed the right front was significantly hotter than the left.
On disassembly, the inner pad on the right front was about 50% thickness, while the outer pad was just a hair from the backing plate. To me, this suggests that the caliper is sticking on the slider pins, and pressure isn't being released on the outbound pad. But...after retracting the caliper piston and re-installing, it seemed to be moving okay. The left front was also showing a little more wear on the outbound pad than the inside pad, but not nearly so much. I find this wear pattern odd because Honda only puts the wear indicators on the inbound pad - you can wear the outbound pad to the backing plate without warning.
So, I went ahead and removed the pin boots and sliders (the sliders seemed fairly dry). There didn't seem to be much grease on the slider, really just a glop on the end. The sliders were still smooth, but the finish was worn in some places. I re-greased and reinstalled them (CRC synthetic brake/caliper grease), along with a new set of pads. So far so good - no roaring, no evidence of dragging.
Has anyone else seen this sort of uneven wear? Is it really just a sliding issue, or should I plan on replacing the calipers too?
