Engine Tick...PLease leave some feedback!!!
hey guys a have a few quick ?s i just bought my tl last week and being i just bought it i nitpick and worry about everything! i notice for a little bit tonight when i was accelerating there was a squealing noise that would come and go probably the serp belt.
not sure if its related but my main thing is i got outta my car while it was still running and heard a ticking noise so i popped the hood and looked around it kinda sounded like valve noise when looking from above. but i got on the ground and could hear it louder from underneith the car... any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks!

Yes check the belt.
I'd say the ticking is normal. I've had a ticking at idle for over a year, it was't too loud but just there. I did a valve adjustment this last weekend, and the intake valves were too loose and the exhaust valves were too tight. I was thinking that would stop the ticking, but ticking is still there.
Is the ticking a new thing? Getting louder? If so maybe rod knock. Can you hear it when you rev it up?
Can you hear it in the car with windows up?
Why is the noise louder under the car? I'd guess because the engine is close to the ground and the sounds are concentrated.

the only way i can hear it in the car is with the windows down at idle it sounds like possibly the tensioner because when i get under ther car its comming from that area.. when i get to work tomorrow im gonna look into it more and put it up on a lift to see if its forsure coming from the bottom.. i just hope its nothing major just bought the car last saturday and theres no warranty on it. ill freak out big time!!

Piston slap is worse when cold.
Rod knock is worse when hot and it's a solid knock that you won't mistake for anything else once you hear it.
Injector tick has an even and sewing machine like sound, usually not louder under the car. You can remove the engine cover and see if it gets louder.
Valvetrain is possible that it can be heard from underneath.
Exhaust leaks can sound like a tick but it's usually from a single cylinder leak which is impossible in these cars.
Even a blown headgasket can sound like a tick.
There are two things I would check right away. Make sure the sparkplugs are tight, we're getting more and more threads of sparkplugs loosening up and blowing out of the head causing head and coil damage. It starts with a tick, should get worse under load.
This brings me to the next question, does it get worse under load or only with rpm? Worse when hot or cold? Any exhaust mods? In gear or in park?
How does it run and idle overall?
There's a plunger in the valvetrain that can get stuck and cause idle noise.
How many miles and has it ever had a valve adjustment.
