Engine shaking & loosing power when accelerating
Engine shaking & loosing power when accelerating
Last week or so my cars check engine light started flickering so i went ahead and changed the sparkplugs that the codes had come up for To no avail ( was still weak when accelerating from a stop till it hits a higher gears). Last night while on the highway it began to lose power while accelerating to the point that the harder i pressed the gas the lower the rpms went and making a horrendous whining sound while shaking like nothing ive seen before with my car in all the years that I've worked on it. It might have been overheating (all though my temp gauge never when up fluid was pumping out of radiator reservoir) and I don't know what to do at this point my dad said my engine is tarnished but why?? Im at 180k miles on my 2005 tl and tips or clues on how to solve this issue?

Well, what was the exact code? Misfires can be the spark plugs, coil packs, bad fuel...or even worse..loss of compression.
So, start from the beginning. What was the exact code that the car threw?

Codes will be helpful but as a preemptive hypothesis, I'm going to guess bad coil packs or a lack of fuel (clogged/sticking injectors or rail, weak fuel pump, etc.). I would start by testing the basics of fuel, use a fuel pressure tester and measure the pressure at the rail and see if it is within spec(not sure myself what it is exactly) then test the coil packs on the designated cylinders then if all that checks out or if you have the spark plugs out anyways, check the compression in each. However, I'm leaning more towards an ignition/combustion issue.

Just a bit of an update for those in the future took it to the shop and the gentleman over there ended up replacing 2 ignition coils and cleared out a bunch of junk in my catalytic converter/exhaust manifold. (I will post a pic of said junk in the next post) I was told that i didnt need to but it was recommended to replace both manifold and C. converter which makes sense because my car doesnt push as much as id expect when pressing the gas
